Shuntavia Rodgers gets the rebound against Houston in Tuesday night Bartlett High School basketball action.

Bartlett girls basketball team is taking early season lumps for late season experience as they tumbled twice this past week.

Foul trouble plagued a game Panther team Tuesday against Houston as the Mustangs broke open a 15-14 contest with a 28-7 second period run on their way to a 68-51 win.

All five Bartlett starters found pine time as Coach Lynn Whitfield protected her youthful charges. Bartlett, starting three freshmen among the five on the floor, never recovered from the charity stripe deficit.

“We’re getting better,” Whitfield said. “We’re getting better every game. We played with Houston but couldn’t stay out of foul trouble. We got good kids, they’re hard workers. We, as coaches, aren’t discouraged and neither are the players.

Junior Shondria Scruggs led the Panthers with 21 points, nine in a game fourth-quarter comeback. Tavia Rodgers added 10 to lead six others on the scoring chart.

“Shondria showing good leadership,” Whitfield said. “I tell the girls, this season is a marathon, not a sprint. They’re buying in and it will show as the season progresses
