As of this morning, all applicants who submitted the necessary paperwork hold a license to begin selling wine. ABC agents completed 578 site inspections by the end of business on Wednesday, and staff has completed reviews of 578 applications. Applications continue to be processed for stores that need further documentation to obtain a license.
Remaining applications, which were generally submitted in late May or mid-June, generally require proof of responsible vendor training for clerks and at least one designated manager before a license may be issued. Staff continues to consult with stores without a license to ensure all the requirements are completed.
Licensed retail food stores in the state are authorized to sell wine July 1st and 2nd; however, under state law, the sale of wine is prohibited on Sunday and the Fourth of July holiday.
According to The Tennessean: “Under the law, wine sales at grocery stores must adhere to the same hours as liquor retailers. That means you can buy wine between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and not on Sundays. Wine sales are not permitted on Christmas, Thanksgiving, Labor Day, New Year’s Day and the Fourth of July.”
Major retailers newly licensed for wine sales include Kroger, Wal-Mart, Publix, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Food City, Food Lion, Costco and Sam’s Club.
