Wildcats use potent ground game to beat Rams

The Bolton High School varsity football team used a crushing run attack and strong defense to beat Frayser 32-14 Friday night at home.

By forcing turnovers and keeping the Rams scoreless through three quarters of play, the Wildcats were able to build a 20-0 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Behind senior running back Brandon Henderson, Bolton gained 285 yards on the ground through the game.

After a scoreless first quarter, senior running back Greg Williams put the Wildcats on the scoreboard in the second on a 15-yard run. Williams averaged seven yards per carry in the game and completed the contest with 50 yards.

Neither team would score again until the second half, when Henderson broke off a quarter-field touchdown run but failed to convert the two-point conversion. Henderson averaged nine yards per carry and finished the game with 163 yards on the ground.

Senior quarterback Kal Granderson scored the next touchdown on a 1-yard scamper. The Wildcats completed the two-point conversion on a run from senior linebacker Garrett Copeland.

Granderson completed half of his passes in the game while throwing for 51 yards and no interceptions.

The Rams finally scored in the fourth quarter on a 47-yard pass from Montavious McNary to Antonio Turner. McNary, who threw for two touchdowns and an interception, finished the contest with nearly 100 passing yards.

After Frayser failed to complete the two-point conversion, the Wildcats scored again on a red zone dash from junior running back Darien Nave. Bolton then failed to complete the two-point conversion.

Frayser scored again on another half-field pass from McNary to Turner and made it a two-possession game.

However, the Wildcats answered with a 50-yard run from junior running back Antwan Hill.

While the Bolton defense let the Rams gain 188 passing yards in the game, it forced two interceptions and allowed only 45 rushing yards.

Bolton (3-3) will host winless Bartlett High School this Friday at 7 p.m.
