What to do when sole candidate in primary election dies

The Bartlett Express asked the Shelby County Republican Party about its 2018 election plans after the July 6 death of State Representative Ron Lollar (R-Bartlett).

He was running unopposed as the Republican candidate for reelection in District 99, and his name remained on the Aug. 2 ballot in the state primaries.

Chairman Lee Mills said, “We encourage everyone to cast their votes for Rep. Lollar. This not only honors him but also allows the process to proceed as intended by state law.”

An additional spokesman for the Shelby County Republican Party explained that another candidate (not yet selected) will be appointed to fill Lollar’s slot. That person’s name will appear on the Nov. 6 ballot.
