Dear editor,
In 1917 and 1942 when our young men and women went off to war, they were told it was “a war to end all wars” and “a war to make the world safe for democracy.” Well, here we are 97 years later and we have less of a democracy now than we had then!
I echo those words of that most highly decorated Marine Corps hero, General Smedley Butler, when he said: “War is Hell!” “War is a racket!” “I say to hell with war!”
I am not such a fool as to believe that war is a thing of the past! We Americans pray that our nation shall avoid war, but if war must come, we shall as we have for the past 239 years — STAND READY to defend our NATION!
Mr. President, Madame Secretary of State, Mr. Secretary of Defense! When you order our United States military to stand down and allow the murder of our Americans in Benghazi, you let our people and our country down! You bring discredit and dishonor to our country and our military!
For the 239 years of our country’s existence, our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines have pledged their lives and their sacred honor to defend and protect our people and beloved country. The United States military stands ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We are paid to go in harm’s way — that’s our job!
In the language of the Rifle Range: We are “Ready on the Right” — “Ready on the Left” — “All Ready on the Firing Line.” Whatever firing is required and where ever that line may be! We do not know where we will fight, but we are ready when the bugle sounds!
We do not know whom we will fight, but the toughest enemy has never proven our equal! We do not know when we will fight, but we can leave today, we can leave tonight, we can leave now!
Old Warriors never die, forever young in heart, mind and spirit, they live on to fight for God and the American way! They cannot, they must not, they will not just fade away!
