USM sets private fundraising mark

HATTIESBURG — The University of Southern Mississippi raised a record $20.2 million in private gifts for the fiscal year 2012, which ended June 30.

Officials say the figure represents a 46 percent increase over the previous record $13.9 million in fiscal 2006.

Bob Pierce, USM’s vice president for advancement, says the top initiative for 2012 was the new College of Business building, followed by a new College of Nursing building.

The fundraising included $6 million from businessman and alumnus Chuck Scianna for the College of Business and $4 million from the Asbury Foundation for the new nursing building.

USM also received $4 million from the Luckyday Foundation for new student housing.

Pierce says USM officials are still finalizing the fiscal 2012 figures.
