Thursday is the filing deadline for candidates running in the county primary election on May 6. Each properly filed petition must contain at least 25 signatures to qualify as a candidate for the May election.
Independent candidate filing petitions must also meet the noon Thursday deadline to qualify for inclusion on the Aug. 7 county general election ballot.
Once filed, petitions will be verified for 25 valid signatures from voters in the district for which the petition is filed.
All candidates will have one week to withdraw by filing the appropriate paperwork at either of the election commission offices: 980 Nixon Drive or 150 Washington Ave, both in Memphis. The withdrawal deadline is noon Feb. 27.
The Election Commission will have a complete list of candidates that have filed petitions available by the close of business on Feb. 20. The list will indicate whether those candidates do or do not have 25 valid signatures.
A complete candidate list will be posted to our website at shelbyvote.com for public viewing along with a copy of the filed petition in portable document format (.pdf).
Certification of candidates will be completed by the Board of Shelby County Election Commission after the withdrawal deadline.
