Tammy Mason: Background

In her prior 28 years with Shelby County Schools, Arlington Community Schools’ superintendent Tammy Mason served first as a teacher at Dogwood Elementary and then moved to Houston Middle School when it opened to teach eighth-grade American history and English.

After nine years in the classroom, she entered school administration as assistant principal at Houston Middle and was later named principal.

In 2011 she was named as Shelby County Schools’ first middle school director.

She then served as Arlington High School’s principal for 2012-2014 before assuming the role as ACS superintendent of education.

Mason also has been named as the Tennessee PTA Principal of the Year. Mason is an Indiana native who’s grown deep roots over nearly three decades in the Mid-South. She relocated to Shelby County in 1986 after receiving her Bachelor of Science in Education degree from St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind., and in 1993 earned her Master of Science in Education (MSE) degree in education and administration supervision from the University of Memphis.
