The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) handled the following incidents in Arlington in July.
Editor’s note: All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of detailed SCSO reports.
July 8
Chester Street (simple assault/domestic violence)

Alcohol and claims of violence brought officers to a home on the 5700 block of Chester Street around 10 p.m. on July 8. Both husband and wife said the wife drank two pints of vodka before they argued. The husband left the home until officers arrived.
He said there was no physical fight, although she said he put his hand on her face and also hit her arms. The wife’s sister said her sibling has a drinking problem and frequently argues with her husband.
Officers couldn’t determine who the primary aggressor was.
The Shelby County Fire Department provided medical treatment at the scene. The wife had a small cut on one hand but wasn’t able to explain how she got it. Officers said the wife appeared to be intoxicated.
July 9
Logan Cove (misdemeanor vandalism)
A woman reported a scratched windshield ($200) on July 9. She was visiting a friend on the 5700 block of Logan Cove and didn’t see any damages to her vehicle when she arrived around midnight. Around 8 a.m., she picked up her boyfriend and he pointed out the scratches.
She also reported that an ex-boyfriend called on July 6, saying he wanted to kill her. It was not known at the time of the report if the two incidents were connected.

July 10
Interstate 40 and Tennessee 385 (motor vehicle theft/passenger vehicle)
A man reported July 10 that someone stole his blue Honda Accord after it broke down.
He locked the car and left it on the side of I-40 near the intersection with Tennessee 385 around 3 p.m. July 7. He returned around 10:30 p.m. but wasn’t able to fix it, and he noticed a green sticker on the driver’s window, telling him to move the car. He returned around 9 a.m. July 8 and the car was gone. He said there was no broken glass in the area to indicate a break-in.
He called all local towing agencies, but none reported having the car. A deputy patrolling the area was not able to locate the car, so an SCSO dispatcher entered the Accord’s vehicle identification number into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.
Misty Trail (aggravated assault)
A resident on the 12000 block of Misty Trail reported around 11:15 p.m. July 10 that he narrowly missed an accident when a medium-size sedan rounded the corner as he was backing out of his driveway. Both drivers had to slam on their brakes.
The Misty Trail resident said the other driver, a white male suspect, got out of his car, and the two argued before the suspect chest-bumped him and threatened to fight. A female victim tried to separate the two men, but then a white female passenger in the suspect’s car was seen removing a silver/nickel-colored handgun from the glove compartment and waving it around before exiting the vehicle, unsteady on her feet, and aiming at the female victim.
Both victims said they feared for their lives. Then the male suspect saw neighbors emerging and told his passenger to get back in the car. He kicked her car door shut and got into his vehicle. The suspects drove south down Hidden Trail.
The Misty Trail resident said the suspect’s vehicle was a silver/tan sedan and gave officers the Tennessee tag number, which traced back to a blue Mercedes on Bending Trail. In a visit to that location, officers talked with the car’s owner, who appeared to be highly intoxicated and said they own a handgun.
July 11
Douglass Street (simple assault/domestic violence)
A woman on the 11800 block of Douglass Street reported finding her mother holding a frozen bag of peas to the left side of her face in the kitchen on the evening of July 11. The mother and the mother’s boyfriend had been fighting, she said.
The mother said she walked into the master bedroom and saw her boyfriend of seven years naked, and she believed he was being unfaithful with one of her friends. The couple fought, and she said he punched the left side of her face and head.
The man said he was asleep when she came in, and there had been no argument or fight.
Officers saw no injuries on the man, but the woman had a bruise on the left side of her face. Both the mother and her boyfriend smelled strongly of alcohol.
Shelby County Fire Engine No. 71 and American Medical Response (AMR) No. 613 arrived, but the mother refused medical treatment.
Officers took the boyfriend to Shelby County Jail on domestic violence charges.
July 13
U.S. 70 (theft from building)
A man said someone stole his wallet after he put it down briefly while scanning items at the self-checkout register of Kroger (11635 U.S. 70) the night of July 13. He noticed he’d forgotten to pick up his wallet after exiting the store, but it was gone when he returned.
The store manager reviewed security footage and saw a suspect take the wallet. The store manager offered to make a copy of the surveillance video for detectives if needed. The wallet contained a driver’s license and multiple ATM, credit, gas, store and insurance cards.
July 15
Marquis Court (simple assault)
Officers responded to a fight between two heavily intoxicated men on the 11100 block of Marquis Court around 11:10 p.m July 15. One man, described as the original aggressor in the fight, had a laceration on his right arm above the elbow. When the two scuffled, he fell onto a glass bottle and cut his arm. A witness confirmed the incident, and evidence in the apartment matched the story.
Although an AMR unit made the scene, the injured man refused treatment and said his girlfriend would take him to the hospital. Both men refused to press charges against each other.
July 16
Doctor Logan Cove (simple assault/domestic violence)
A woman reported in the early hours of July 16 that she argued with her brother on July 15 at their mother’s house, where they both live. She said he yelled and threatened to kill her and her dog before he left.
She said he returned at 11:15 p.m., yelling and cursing at their mother. When the sister told him to leave, he threatened her dog again, spit in her face, put his finger on her nose and pushed her, she said.
He left before officers arrived. She refused medical treatment, and officers did not see any physical injuries.
Hidden Trail (intimidation/domestic violence)
A woman reported on July 16 that she and her boyfriend were arguing when he threatened to cut her throat. She went to a neighbor’s house and called the sheriff’s office.
He left before officers arrived, and she refused transportation to a safe place. Officers saw no signs of a physical fight. She also told officers that she had been drinking.
She said he has been staying with her since June 28, when he was released from jail on a previous domestic violence incident with her.
July 18
Longleaf Oak Trail (misdemeanor vandalism)
A woman reported on July 18 that someone had cut the gas line between her outdoor grill and a propane tank. Her son found the damage on July 15, and she didn’t know when or why the offense occurred, as the propane tank was not stolen. She said her son had since removed the tank.
Ewing Boulevard (other theft/non-specific)
A man was working in his front yard on the 6200 block of Ewing Boulevard on July 18, and he briefly left his 16-inch Worx electric chainsaw ($120) unattended around 2:15 p.m. It was gone when he returned about five minutes later.
He said he hadn’t seen any unusual vehicles or strange activity in the area before the theft, and he did not have the chainsaw’s serial number immediately available.
July 20
Campbell Avenue (theft from building)
A man was arrested on an unrelated warrant around 3 a.m. July 20 when deputies arrived at the scene where he and a female were arguing on the 12100 block of Campbell Avenue.
When he got home at 7:42 p.m., he noticed that his LG cellphone was missing. He said the female likely took it as she had access to his home and had called a mutual friend, probably with his phone.
July 24
Airline Road (theft from building)
A resident on the 3800 block of Airline Road reported July 24 that multiple items were missing from his home, which he shares with his brother, the suspect.
Items taken sometime between 3 p.m. July 22 and 8 a.m. July 24 included a Naxa 32-inch TV ($100), Skil brand miter saw ($150), two RCA DVD Blu-Ray players ($150), about 200 DVDs ($1,000), a Hewlett Packard multifunction computer printer ($300), about 40 music CDs ($200), and a Dewalt drill ($100). He did not have any model or serial numbers available.
There were no signs of forced entry into the residence. The victim said his brother probably took the items and sold or pawned them.
The suspect is the primary renter of the property and has been trying to kick the victim out since July 5. The victim said his brother is known to use a pawn shop on U.S. 51.
Power tools belonging to the suspect were left undisturbed in the house and on the front porch. Additional tools belonging to the victim were left undisturbed throughout the house.
About 45 minutes after the original visit, officers responded to the same scene, where the brother (the suspect in the first report) also reported a theft.
He said the lock on his bedroom door was broken when he returned home that morning, but the officers said it didn’t appear the door was capable of being locked.
The brother said someone entered the house through an unsecured window and took his Sony TV ($150) and unknown DVDs ($100).
He said the last time he saw the stolen items was at 4:30 p.m. July 23.
July 27
U.S. 70 (simple assault)
A man reported that the owner of Game Time (11695 U.S. 70) injured his finger in an argument the afternoon of July 27 at the store, but the owner said it was an accident.
According to the victim, he was showing the owner a breaker he had turned off while doing maintenance work, and the owner became upset and slammed the circuit breaker box on the victim’s right index finger. The responding officer saw a laceration on the victim’s finger.
The victim’s son said he had previously argued with the store owner and his wife and was waiting in his father’s truck when he heard his father scream. He saw his father doubled over, holding his hand.
The owner had hired the victim and his son to clean the hood on his business. He said he sent the son outside after the son cursed his wife. The owner then went outside with the victim to show him which breaker they were not supposed to shut off.
The two men argued, and the owner said he got frustrated because the victim and his son shut off the wrong breaker, causing the building to overflow with smoke. He said he slammed the circuit breaker box without realizing the victim’s finger was in the way, and he immediately apologized for the injury.
A crime scene officer took photos of the scene, and Arlington Fire arrived and treated the victim’s injuries.
Airline Road (other theft/non-specific)
A resident on the 4500 block of Airline Road noticed that two of his Shindaiwa leaf blowers were missing from his trailer parked outside his home the morning of July 27, and the bungee cords that were wrapped around them had been cut.
He said the last time he saw them was around 6 p.m. July 25. Both items’ serial numbers were entered into the NCIC database.
July 28
Chester Street (felony vandalism)
A woman reported on July 28 that she went to her barn on the 4400 block of Chester Street around 6:30 p.m. and noticed some items were out of place. When the lawn mower wouldn’t start, she saw that its battery cable had been cut.
She looked at surveillance footage of the barn and saw an unknown white male enter the barn at 11 p.m. July 26. He crawled under the barn’s locked gate.
The responding officer saw that the battery cable and a gas line had been cut on the mower. The victim offered to provide a disc of the security video. She could not advise at the time if anything else was damaged or missing.
July 30
Brian Ridge Road (other theft/non-specific)
A man reported on July 30 that his ladder was missing from his home on the 5000 block of Brian Ridge Road. The last time he saw it was at 4 p.m. June 30, propped against the side of his home.
Chester Street (other theft/non-specific)
A man reported July 30 that someone stole his deer stand from the field where he hunts on Chester Street at Pinckley Road. He last saw it at noon May 27. He noticed it was missing when he returned at 1 p.m. July 27.
July 31
Airline Road (embezzlement)
On July 31, a manager reported money missing from a business at 4935 Airline Road. She said that a female employee’s cash register’s ending count was $75 short when it was recounted on July 30.
The employee said she had been moved from the front counter register to the drive-thru register and then back to the front register during her July 29 shift.
She said she used the restaurant’s register system to move her funds from the front register to the drive-through but didn’t do so for the move back.
The night manager alerted the manager that the employee’s register was missing cash when they closed at midnight.
The manager said two other employees were cashiers on that shift, and the restaurant doesn’t have cameras so they don’t know who might be responsible for the theft.
