An employee of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office was arrested Monday on charges of domestic violence-bodily assault.

Bentley “Chip” Washington, 58, of Bartlett was arrested at his ex-girlfriend’s home at the Rivercrest Apartments on Sawyer Circle, Memphis.

His ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Nelson, reported that she was sitting in her car with the window rolled down in the parking lot when he arrived. They argued about her Facebook posts with another man, and she said Washington punched her left arm twice.

They went into her apartment, where she said he grabbed and broke the silver necklace she was wearing, shoved her onto the couch and threw pillows at her.

Nelson said she was afraid, and Memphis Police Department officers arrived on scene and took Washington into custody.

He was arraigned Tuesday for the Class A misdemeanor.

Washington is the SCSO’s public information officer, and he is currently suspended without pay.
