Shelby County ranks ninth in U.S. for violent crimes

Shelby County ranked ninth nationwide in a list of the top 30 counties with the highest violent crime rates per 100,000 people, according to research by FindTheHome.com.

The real estate research site looked at the 2014 FBI Uniform Crime Report (the latest complete data set) and identified counties with the highest violent crime rate.

The violent crime rate is the total number of crimes reported to law enforcement agencies within a county per 100,000 people. The data analysts used population estimates from the 2014 American Community Survey. Only counties with a population greater than 1,000 are considered.
Shelby County showed a violent crime rate of 1,351 incidents per 100,000 residents for that time period.
