The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) handled the following incidents in Lakeland during the latter half of May. The earlier incidents were listed in last week’s issue of The Bartlett Express.
Editor’s note: All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of detailed SCSO reports.
May 17
Triumph Circle (threatening phone call)
Two mothers clashed after their tensions escalated between their daughters, according to a May 17 report.
The first mother said her daughter has been threatened by the other woman’s daughter. She said the other mother then sent a text that made her fear bodily harm. The message read, “I’m trying to be nice about this, but you’ve crossed the line. Confront my daughter again and the school will be the least of your problems.”
May 18
Memphis Arlington Road (identity theft)
A man discovered more than $1,500 in fraudulent charges when he reviewed his First South checking account, he reported on May 18.
Charges included $503 on May 12, $503 on May 13 at and $503.95 on May 14 at different locations.
May 19
Misty Bay Cove (misdemeanor vandalism)
A Nissan Altima owner suspects vandalism for the nail she found in her rear driver’s side tire on May 19.
She discovered the nail in the tire’s sidewall while her car was parked in her driveway. She suspected a white male stranger she saw parked in an unknown Ford outside her home around 3 a.m., but she didn’t see him vandalize the vehicle.
May 20
Champions Drive (simple assault/domestic violence)
A mother reported May 20 that her daughter’s boyfriend had injured her daughter two days earlier.
The victim said her boyfriend came over around 3:30 p.m. when the mother was gone from their home on the 2900 block of Champions Drive. He wanted to do more than just hang out, and he got upset when she refused, she said. That’s when he punched her, leaving a small laceration near her right eye.
May 24
Putter Lane (residential burglary)
A son home alone the morning of May 24 discovered a kicked-in back door and items missing from his home on the 3000 block of Putter Lane. His mother said he left immediately to go to his girlfriend’s home in the nearby condominiums.
Responding officers didn’t find anyone inside, but they saw a footprint on the back door and the door’s knob latch assembly on the floor. When the son returned, he said he discovered the intrusion when he went downstairs at 9:30 a.m. He also found their dog in his mom’s bedroom, but she said it was roaming the house when she left to take her youngest son to the school bus.
Three items missing were a $400 Xbox taken from an upstairs bedroom, a $50 Xbox from the living room and a $300 hoverboard.
The crime happened between 8:25 a.m. and around 10:30 a.m. May 24. No serial numbers were available, and there were no known witnesses or cameras in the area.
The mother said there was a similar incident at her next-door neighbor’s home a year earlier.
Old Trail Cove (identity theft)
Although she never lost possession of her Discover credit card, a woman reported May 24 that someone still managed to charge nearly $200 of merchandise on it.
The woman bought an item at WalMart in Bartlett around 4 p.m. May 12. After she left, the Discovery Credit Company called her about two other charges on her account. She did not make the $110.55 or $71.94 charges, she said.
May 25
Pelican Hill Cove (theft from motor vehicle)
Someone broke into a Hyundai Elantra while it was parked in a driveway on the 4000 block of Pelican Hill Cove. The owner said he saw the broken rear driver’s side window at 7:15 a.m.
Items taken included a black Swiss Army computer bag ($25), a black Verizon Air card ($50), three flash drives ($20 each) and a computer mouse ($35). The bag also contained miscellaneous pens, papers, files and his bank statement. The window damage was estimated at $250.
The last time he saw his vehicle undisturbed was the previous evening at 7 p.m. There were no known suspects or witnesses at the time of the report, but two nearby homes had security cameras.
An officer took crime scene photos but couldn’t locate any fingerprints.
Stonecrest Circle (intimidation)
A female victim reported an intimidation incident that happened around 9 p.m. May 25. She and four others were talking outside a home on the 3100 block of Stonecrest Circle when a Ford Focus pulled up. A female in the front passenger seat screamed at the female victim, saying she would beat her, and she tried to coax the victim out to the vehicle. The driver didn’t make any threats.
They fled westbound on Kingsridge toward Davies Plantation when the victim called the SCSO.
The female victim gave both suspects’ names to the responding officer and said they have been feuding with her over social media.
Three Iron Drive (other theft/non-specific)
A woman on the 9200 block of Three Iron Drive reported May 25 that someone had stolen her dog kennel and other items from outside her front door. she said she’s had problems with area juveniles who hang around near her front door.
The thefts happened between 7:45 a.m. that morning and around 8:45 p.m. when she returned from work. She didn’t have serial numbers for any of the missing items.
May 26
Long Bridge Lane (motor vehicle theft/passenger vehicle)
Someone stole a man’s locked car while it was parked on the street outside his home, he reported on May 26.
The vehicle, a light blue two-door 2011 Hyundai Genesis, was taken between 9:30 p.m. May 25 and about 7 a.m. the next morning. There was no broken glass in the area, no one else has a key and he didn’t hear the audible alarm go off. He also said he’s current on his payments, and SCSO Communications could not find any repossession or tow-in information about the vehicle.
The thief also nabbed the victim’s wallet, containing his Tennessee driver’s license, from inside the vehicle.
The vehicle’s information was added to the NCIC database.
Wood Green Lane (attempted theft from motor vehicle)
A resident on the 9600 block of Wood Green Lane said someone rummaged through his vehicle without stealing anything overnight between 10 p.m. May 25 and around 4 a.m. the next morning. His son discovered the intrusion when he was leaving for work.
There was no damage to the vehicle itself. A pair of reading glasses was removed but found nearby in the grass.
The victim had already contaminated the vehicle such that no fingerprints were available, and none were found on the reading glasses.
May 27
Salem Valley Cove (non-residential burglary)
Someone forced open two padlocks on a home’s storage shed and stole more than $8,800 in yard equipment and other items, the victim reported on May 27.
The shed is on the southeast side of the home on the 6800 block of Salem Valley Cove. Items taken from the shed included an Exmark lawnmower, Shindawia blower, Stihl weed trimmer, Battery Tender battery charger and gas can. Someone also took a trailer from behind the storage shed.
The thefts totaled $8,874 and occurred between about 6 p.m. May 22 and 5:20 a.m. May 27. Rain obscured any tracks from the theft.
The victim had no suspect information, and the crime scene deputy took photos of the scene but could not retrieve any prints.
Knob Hill Road (theft from building)
A mother on the 3000 block of Knob Hill Road noticed her debit card was missing on May 27 and pointed the finger at her daughter as a possible suspect, based on past experiences.
By the time she realized the card was missing, the thief had racked up $135.72 in withdrawals or purchases. Her daughter was not present at the time of the report.
May 29
Fletcher Trace Parkway (misdemeanor drugs/narcotics violation)
Officers smelled intoxicants during a traffic stop on May 29, and the driver did poorly on a field sobriety test.
The officers saw the suspect’s pickup speeding east on U.S. 64 near Interstate 40 at 2:18 a.m. They pulled him over and had him get out to test his sobriety for driving. He had suspicious involuntary eye movements and couldn’t balance on one leg, count properly, walk the line, step heel-to-toe or complete the walk-and-turn test without raising his arms for balance.
In plain view in the vehicle’s center console, officers found two baggies of a green leafy substance, a glass pipe with residue and an open bottle of beer with about three-quarters of the drink remaining.
The leafy substance tested positive as marijuana and weighed in at 10.3 grams total net weight (12.4 grams total gross weight). The driver was taken to 201 Poplar for a DUI blood draw.
Barley Mills circle (simple assault/domestic violence)
A couple’s argument turned into a physical fight on May 29.
The woman said they were arguing at his apartment when he tried to force her to leave. She said he threw her into a table and kicked her in her right ear while she was on the ground. He said she fell and hit her ear.
The responding deputies saw a large bruise and small abrasions on the victim’s right ear.
