SCSO releases May report for Arlington

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) reported the following incidents in Arlington for May. (Editor’s note: All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of more detailed SCSO reports.)

May 2

Millwind Drive (theft from building): Someone stole electronics from a home on the 11600 block of Millwind Drive between about 8:30 a.m. and 9:50 a.m. May 2. The victim said he saw that his garage door was open when he returned home. He searched the home and found that his Xbox One, Xbox 3 and Toshiba laptop were missing. He shares the home with his brother, and they recently asked a third person to leave after about a four-week stay. The victim said the third person would have known when the home was unoccupied and is the only one (aside from the brothers and their mother) who knew the access code.The SCSO responded to the theft report on May 2, and the responding officer found no signs of forcible entry. The dispatcher reported the stolen items’ serial numbers to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
Airline Road (theft from building): A theft victim on the 4700 block of Airline Road said someone stole his refurbished PlayStation 3 ($179.99) and a Call of Duty Ghost video game ($59.99) sometime between 10 a.m. April 28 and about 2:30 p.m. May 2.He and another friend were in the back of his home gathering scrap metal on April 30 when the suspect came inside. The victim said he noticed the items were missing sometime after the friend left. He called pawn shops and found the PlayStation at Rely-A-Pawn in West Memphis, Ark. The shop named the suspect as the person who had pawned it.The SCSO responded to the reported theft on May 2, and the SCSO dispatcher entered the PlayStation 3’s serial number into NCIC.

May 3

Logan Cove (forcible fondling): A mother on the 5700 block of Dr. Logan Cove reported another boy for fondling her son. She said the incident occurred about two weeks before she reported it, between 4 p.m. April 17 and about 10:20 a.m. on May 3.The boy’s grandmother was a witness. She said she fell asleep on the sofa while the boys were watching TV and looked for them when she awoke. She found them in the bathroom, pulling up and fastening their belts and pants. Her grandson would not say what happened, and she believed that the suspect must have threatened him.The victim later called 911 and said he was scared of the suspect, but he didn’t mention the previous incident. Then he told his mother about the fondling, and she reported it to the SCSO. The responding officer took her report on May 3, and she said the suspect took her son’s clothes off and touched him about the shoulder, butt and penis.
Statley Hollow Cove (theft from motor vehicle): A resident on the 5700 block of Statley Hollow Cove reported that someone stole cash from her unlocked truck while it was parked in her driveway.The theft occurred sometime between 7:45 a.m. and about 9:15 a.m. May 3. The victim noticed the front driver’s seat in her 2014 gray Dodge Ram pickup was laid completely back, and neither she nor a friend had moved the seat. She immediately checked her wallet in the center console. About $7 in ones and $3 in quarters were missing.A neighbor also reported seeing a suspicious person inside a different vehicle nearby around 5:50 a.m. May 3. The suspect noticed him and abruptly left, disappearing over another home’s fence. The suspect wore a blue University of Memphis hoodie and was a thin, light-complexioned black male between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing about 125-135 pounds. The SCSO responded on May 3.
Master Woods Cove (theft from motor vehicle): A deputy responded at 11:50 a.m. May 3 to a report of juveniles who appeared to be drinking alcohol in a car on the 5700 block of Logan Cove. Two were underage, and they were drinking alcohol. The third person was wearing a set of Beats headphones with the serial number removed.The deputy recalled that someone had stolen Beats headphones ($170) from a vehicle on that same cove on April 30. In an interview that followed at the SCSO (201 Poplar Avenue), the suspect confessed to the theft after being read his Miranda rights.

May 4

Longleaf Oak Trail (threatening phone call): A mother on the 12200 block of Longleaf Oak Trail reported on May 4 finding a disturbing message on her daughter’s cell phone the previous day. The message was from a male friend, warning her daughter that another person had published an obscene message that included the girl’s name and phone number. The mother contacted the friend, who sent a snapshot of where the message originated (in the area of Macon and Houston Levee).The mother named a suspect who lived in that area and said the suspect sent her daughter a threatening message earlier on May 3. The message said the girl never cared about him, and it also said, “you ruin my life so I’m going to ruin yours.”The mother said she feared for her daughter’s safety and that the suspect has threatened to kill himself in the past. She also said she’s spoken with the suspect’s mother about these threats.

May 5

Ewe Turn Drive (forcible rape): An officer responded on May 5 to a report of sexual assault on Ewe Turn Drive. The incident occurred between noon May 4 and 3 p.m. May 5. No additional details are currently available on this incident.

May 6

Statley Hollow Cove (theft from motor vehicle): A complainant reported on May 6 that someone rifled through the center console and glove compartment of her unlocked 2013 Honda Accord while it was parked in her driveway, but nothing was stolen. The incident occurred between 5:45 a.m. on May 3 and 12:47 p.m. May 6.A neighbor reported seeing a black male suspect walking away from the car during that time frame. The neighbor followed, calling the SCSO. The description matched a suspect charged on May 4 in another nearby auto burglary. The neighbor picked the suspect out of a photo lineup.

May 9

Airline Road (theft from building): A victim reported on May 9 that someone stole cash from her purse, and she believes the theft occurred when she left it unsupervised in Room 414 at Arlington High School (5475 Airline Road). She had about $200 in her wallet, which she left in her purse by her desk when she went to lunch. Later, she went to Sonic Drive-In and noticed there was only $6 left in her wallet when she tried to pay for some food.She said she has no proof of who took the money but will prosecute if anyone is charged. The theft occurred between 10:52 a.m. May 8 and 7:23 a.m. May 9.

May 10

Dr. Logan Drive (aggravated assault/domestic violence): Someone stabbed a middle-aged man while he was washing his car in his mother’s driveway on the 11800 block of Dr. Logan Drive. The attack occurred between 5:20 p.m. and 6:07 p.m. May 10.The victim said the suspect approached and said, “Wash that car [expletive deleted]” before stabbing him with a folding pocket knife. The responding officer observed about a one-inch cut on the victim’s upper left arm. He was treated on scene for the injury.Officers found the suspect walking through a field south of the scene and took him into custody; they didn’t find the knife. They interviewed the victim’s mother, who backed up his story of the assault. Officers took the suspect to 201 Poplar on domestic violence/aggravated assault charges.
U.S. 70 (intimidation): A customer at Kroger (11635 U.S. 70) verbally abused a cashier and shift manager when stopped from taking unpaid merchandise outside with her while she got her wallet. The incident happened between 9:55 p.m. and 11:37 p.m. on May 10.The cashier rang up four packs of cigarettes, and the customer put them in her purse and said she was going to the car to get her wallet. When the cashier and shift manager refused, the customer became verbally abusive and then threw the packs of cigarettes at the cashier but missed. The tirade continued, and the customer claimed there was a racial bias against her. The cashier said the customer then walked very close and said she would punch the cashier in the face if she had the money to pay her jail bond fee. The suspect walked out, spewing curses and racial statements.The cashier didn’t know the suspect’s name but described her as a white woman age 50-60, about 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighing about 220 pounds, with red hair and a fair complexion.

May 13

Airline Road (pocket picking): A male victim said someone stole his iPhone 5 from his front pocket around 11:10 a.m. on May 13 during lunch at Arlington High School (5475 Airline Road). The phone appeared to be turned off and unavailable for tracking at the time of the report. The responding officer didn’t see the theft in a review of the cafeteria video.

May 15

Airline road (simple assault): A woman reported on May 15 that her granddaughter said an unknown black male hit her face a few days earlier at Arlington High School and then ran off. The incident happened when she was walking in the 400 hallway stairwell to class around 10:25 a.m. on May 12.The grandmother said the attack was probably a retaliation against the girl for filing a complaint about forcible fondling; the victim intends to prosecute in the forcible fondling case.A review of a nearby camera’s video didn’t show anyone running or acting suspiciously, and the girl didn’t want to look in the school’s yearbook to identify the male.

May 16

English Oak Drive (residential burglary): A deputy responded to a residential burglary report on the 5500 block of English Oak Drive on May 16 and detained a suspect who had a concealed large knife.The May 16 incident began when the homeowner on English Oak Drive noticed a suspicious man on the corner of Scarlet Ridge and Maple Landing. The suspect was a white male wearing khaki shorts and a dark jacket, holding a large metal implement. The homeowner mentioned the suspicious man to a neighbor, who went to check his own home because of recent area burglaries.The neighbor spotted the suspicious man standing in the homeowner’s front yard, so he stopped to ask the suspect what he was doing. The suspect said he was trying to find a friend, but he couldn’t name who owned the property where he stood or the friend he was seeking.The suspect told the deputy he lives in the area and just likes to walk around. The deputy asked him to identify the large metal implement he’d been holding, and the suspect said he occasionally carries a knife to “throw at stuff for target practice.” The deputy detained him in a SCSO vehicle and found a large stainless steel throwing knife (about 11 inches long, with a blade of about 6.25 inches) inside his jacket.Two deputies and the witness them checked the homeowner’s residence and found a screen that had been pried away from a rear window. Deputies also saw scratch marks on the frames of many of the windows around the home. Damage was estimated at $250. A crime scene tech took photos and lifted ridge detail from the damaged window screen.During their investigation, the deputies also came across a SCSO memo taken on May 9 from the 5500 block of Scarlett Ridge, where a homeowner found similar damage to a rear window.Officers took the suspect to the SCSO General Investigations Bureau, issued a warrant and booked the suspect on burglary-related and weapons charges.

May 19

Airline Road (felony vandalism): A mother reported on May 19 that her daughter found a long, deep scratch on her car, parked in the Arlington High School parking lot on May 16. It appeared to have been keyed from the rear to the front on the driver’s side of the vehicle (more than $500 in damages) during the school day.

May 20

Country Valley Drive (intimidation): A female victim said she was out jogging shortly between 9:30 p.m. and about 11:15 p.m. on May 20 when two young white males began harassing her.The first suspect was on a skateboard, and the second suspect rode a small silver bicycle. As the victim was finishing her run, the first suspect told her they wanted to touch her bottom. Both reached for her, but she eluded their grasps. She said she feared the boys and tried to keep moving. She asked the first suspect about his name, and he confirmed it, so the victim said she would talk to his parents. The suspects fled the scene, heading eastbound on Country Valley.The victim, who lives on the 12000 block of Country Valley Drive, went to the first suspect’s home on the 5700 block of Stately Hollow. His mother asked what her son had done this time.Officers have been to the victim’s home twice previously on reports of her son being punched, beaten and bullied by the first suspect and others.

May 21

Logan Circle (theft from building): A victim on the 5700 block of Logan Circle reported her ex-boyfriend hit her and stole items from her home because he was upset she had broken up with him the previous day.She was returning from work around 3:05 p.m. on May 21 when she saw his car driving up with the lights off. He walked in, stole a pair of Nike shoes, took her mother’s cellphone while she was trying to call the police, and walked out. She followed him outside and said he turned and punched the right side of her face. She ran inside and locked the door, and he drove away. Before the officers arrived, the suspect returned and beat on the doors but then left again, she said. She found her mother’s phone on the ground outside the house while officers were on the scene. Officers didn’t observe any injuries to her face, and she declined medical care.
Airline Road (scrap metal theft): Someone stole about $700 of scrap metal from the 4700 block of Airline Road between 5 p.m. May 9 and 12:38 p.m. May 21. The victim said the scrap metal was from a dismantled communication tower.
Airline Road (drug equipment violation): Officers arrested a man wanted on a theft warrant and found illegal drug equipment in his possession on May 21.An officer was waiting for the man in the driveway of Donelson Elementary School, but the man spotted him, turned around and headed north on Airline Road. He turned into a driveway on the 4700 block of Airline Road, and the officer stopped and detained him without incident. The warrant was for property $500 or less.One of the officers searching his vehicle found and confiscated a metal box containing a spoon and syringe between the front seats in front of the console. They left his vehicle on scene per his request for it to be towed. The incident occurred between 12:02 p.m. and 12:39 p.m.
Airline Road (simple assault): A female victim at Arlington High School (5475 Airline Road) said a male suspect punched her and ran away between 1:50 p.m. and almost 3 p.m. May 21. The officer and a teacher tried but failed to locate the suspect.The victim said the suspect threw a piece of paper at her during seventh-period class, and they began to argue. He got angry and swore at her. After the bell rang, he approached her, punched her in the face, grabbed her and threw her to the floor.The officer saw that her right eye was swollen and her right shoulder was scratched. The officer said he would try to interview the suspect the next day at school.
U.S. 70 (felony vandalism and domestic violence): A female victim said her ex-boyfriend came to her workplace on the 11600 block of U.S. 70 and got angry when he saw another male was also visiting her. The ex-boyfriend wanted to fight, but the other male refused. Then the ex-boyfriend grabbed her phone, put it on the floor and broke it with a tool taken from one of the cleaners.The suspect was not on scene at the time of the report. The incident occurred between 7:45 p.m. and 8:25 p.m. on May 21.

May 23

Airline Road (felony vandalism): In recent weeks at Arlington High School, someone vandalized the boys’ restrooms on the 200, 300 and 400 hallways and the boys’ restroom in the study hall area. Then an anonymous student reported seeing a male suspect writing “Juggalo” on a restroom wall with a black marker sometime between 7 a.m. and 9:36 a.m. on May 23.The suspect admitted to writing the word because he was bored, and he gave the marker to an unknown student afterward. The suspect said he was sorry and offered to clean up. However, building management personnel who have tried to clear the graffiti for several days estimate it will cost $500 to $1,000 to refinish the painting on the wall.The suspect received a juvenile summons for felony vandalism, and he will be suspended for 10 days in the 2014-2015 school year.
Jackson (theft from building): A victim on the 6100 block of Jackson said he suspects a home remodeler stole several items from his garage and home while he was working there between Oct. 1, 2013, and May 23 of this year. The items that turned up missing included miscellaneous tools, a deer rifle, and two hedge trimmers. He said that he referred the remodeler to a friend, whose home was also burglarized.The victim said he didn’t have serial numbers for the stolen items, but his name was either etched into or written on the stolen tools. He reported the thefts on May 23.
Aubrey Ranch Drive (simple assault): A female victim on the 6100 block of Aubrey Ranch Drive said her husband choked her in a domestic argument around 8:50 p.m. on May 23.She said he had been drinking, and they argued about getting him to take care of their mentally challenged son the next day so she could take a morning shower. He got angry because that meant he would have to get up earlier.They began to argue, and he pushed and choked her. She grabbed his chest and squeezed until he released her throat. Then he backed up and came at her again, grabbing at her throat. She broke free and told him she was calling 911, so he changed clothes and left. The victim said she had no injuries and did not lose consciousness during the attack.

May 24

Memphis Arlington Road (theft from motor vehicle): A victim said someone stole her purse from the front seat of her Honda Civic/Del Sol while it was parked at the Arlington Sports Complex (11307 Memphis Arlington Road). She parked the vehicle around 9:45 a.m. and noticed the theft when she got home around 11:30 a.m. Someone used her Wells Fargo debit card at Dillard’s Wolfchase location at 9:30 a.m. ($65.54) and at a Circle Store at 11:04 a.m. ($18.08).

May 25

Lamb Road (residential burglary): Someone burglarized a home on the 5400 block of Lamb Road between approximately 6 p.m. May 23 and 11:30 p.m. May 25. The victim said the front door was open when they returned home, and a 60-inch flat-screen TV and a 32-inch flat-screen TV were gone. The victim didn’t have serial numbers for the two TVs. Other valuables were left untouched.The burglar failed to pry open the back door and then broke the glass window to open the deadbolt and enter the home. The victim mentioned one suspect as a possibility.

May 27

Orville Cove (felony vandalism): A homeowner on the 11100 block of Orville Cove found his master bedroom window cracked ($500) when he returned from work on May 27. It appeared to have been shot with a BB gun. The vandalism occurred between 8 a.m. May 26 and 6 p.m. May 27.
