The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office handled the following incidents in Arlington during the first half of August. For later August incidents, see next week’s issue of The Bartlett Express.
Editor’s note: All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of detailed SCSO reports.
Aug. 1
Rosebrook Lane (theft from motor vehicle)
An unsecured car is no place to leave tempting possessions. An Arlington woman left the windows of her Dodge Charger partially rolled down on July 29. By Aug. 1, someone had stolen her purse with $600 in cash and a bottle of about 90 Adderall pills.
Aug. 2
Gulf Stream Road (simple assault)
A July 31 workplace dispute at Maines Paper and Food (11420 Gulf Stream Road) led to a fistfight that was reported a couple of days later. The victim didn’t report the incident until after visiting a clinic for undisclosed injuries.
A witness who broke up the attack said it began when a day supervisor’s shift extended into a night employee’s shift. Security video showed the night employee attacking the supervisor, punching him 5-10 times in the head. Neither suspect nor victim was on scene when deputies arrived.
U.S. 70 (embezzlement)
A loss prevention associate for Dollar General (12035 U.S. 70) reported that a former employee worked with someone else to steal at least $1,500 in merchandise between June 24 and Aug. 2. The ex-employee would check out purchases for an unknown black male suspect, who would pay for one item while carrying multiple items and then return to get a refund for the items he never purchased.
One time, the ex-employee scanned only the suspect’s tote bag but none of its contents. The suspect returned five minutes later and got a refund for all the items inside the tote; when he left, he took all of the returned items and the refunded money.
Neither the ex-employee or the unknown accomplice were on scene at the time of the report.
Aug. 4
Longleaf Oak Trail (theft from motor vehicle)
Another unsecured vehicle was the target of theft in Arlington. The owner left her Microsoft Surface device and its case ($1,000) inside her unlocked Ford F150 around 1:30 p.m. Aug. 3. She realized it was missing around 8 a.m. Aug. 4.
The responding deputy saw no signs of forced entry and couldn’t process the scene because the victim had contaminated the scene.
Aug. 6
Doctor Logan Cove (simple assault/domestic violence)
An evicted sister got violent, according to her brother and another sister.
On Aug. 6, the brother said the evicted sister returned to the house to pick up some personal property she had left behind. Another sister, who lives there and who has an active order of protection against the evicted sister, was present. When the brother was speaking to the evicted sister through the unlocked security door, she barged in and bit him on his chest.
The responding officers saw her red lipstick on the front of the brother’s white shirt, as well as an abrasion on his chest directly under the lipstick stain. One officer took crime scene photos of the injury, the man’s shirt, and the woman’s lipstick. The victim refused an offer for medical attention.
Officers took the evicted sister to Shelby County Jail East on charges of domestic assault.
Aug. 7
U.S. 70 (theft of vehicle parts/accessories)
A man said on Aug. 7 that someone stole the license plate from the car his wife drives. The yellow Chevrolet Cobalt stays in the garage at home, and his wife only drives the vehicle to Dollar General (12035 U.S. 70), where she works. The store doesn’t have video surveillance of the parking lot.
A dispatcher put the license plate’s information into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.
Aug. 10
Airline Road (simple assault)
Two Arlington High School boys argued and then fought about a girl just as school dismissed on Aug. 10.
Student A has a girlfriend, and he confronted Student B in the gym hall for saying bad things about her. Other students egged on the fight, they both said, and it ended with Student A getting a bloody nose. The school nurse checked out both students and said they were fine.
An assistant principal contacted both students’ parents, who said they don’t want to press charges. The students each received a three-day school suspension.

Someone stole a student’s backpack Aug. 10 while he was talking with friends in the Arlington High School parking lot after dismissal.

Someone stole a student’s backpack Aug. 10 while he was talking with friends in the Arlington High School parking lot after dismissal. The backpack contained his wallet with his driver’s license, cash and a First Tennessee debit card.
Someone used his debit card at the Shell Station (5055 Airline Road) for $15.63. The store clerk there wasn’t immediately able to pull the video surveillance but said he remembers three black males using a card for that amount.
Aug. 11
U.S. 70 (counterfeiting/forgery)
The store manager at Arlington Liquor (11949 U.S. 70) found a returned check for $466.88 when he was closing out the monthly accounts on Aug. 11. In-store security footage showed that a black male cashed the check on July 22.
The check was written on a Lenny’s Sub’s bank account, and the suspect left his thumbprint on it.
Aug. 14
Memphis Arlington Road (theft from motor vehicle)
A jogger who left his vehicle unlocked at the Arlington Sports Complex (11307 Memphis Arlington Road) was the victim of theft on Aug. 14.
When he arrived, he noticed a small silver sedan in the parking lot but couldn’t tell if it was occupied. After he jogged, he saw that the sedan had pulled alongside his vehicle. When he approached, the car drove away before he could get a description of the driver or any tag information. The wallet he left in the car was open, and his Orion Visa credit card and cash were missing.
Aug. 16
Airline Road (misdemeanor drugs/narcotics violation)
The principal at Arlington High School interviewed a student reported to smell like marijuana smoke on Aug. 16. The responding officer confirmed the strong odor seemed to be from marijuana and noticed that the students eyes were droopy and glassy.
The student confessed that he and a female student smoked some in the neighborhood before coming to school. An officer and an assistant principal interviewed the girl, who didn’t appear to be under the influence of drugs and didn’t have the odor of marijuana on her hands or clothes. She admitted to having a small amount of marijuana (0.1 gram), a razor blade and a vaporizer with her.
Both students received an 180-day suspension, and she also received a juvenile summons for possession of a controlled substance.
