Retire with zest, says Cordova author

Mary Ashmore Scobey
Mary Ashmore Scobey, Cordova author, 88

Mary Ashmore Scobey of Cordova brings a new outlook to growing older in her book, “The Trials and Triumphs of Growing Older.”

The 88-year-old author says the senior years can be some of the most enjoyable and rewarding part of one’s life.

She and nine other local authors will be on hand July 12 to sign copies of their books and discuss their latest titles at Barnes & Noble Booksellers’ Local Author Panel 2014.

This year’s event will be 2-4 p.m. at the Wolfchase Galleria location.

Scobey maintains that, even before retirement, people should begin preparing for that time of life when they can pursue hobbies and interests long put on hold.

Her self-improvement book offers entertaining suggestions and ideas on making the most of the years following retirement.

It was only after reaching her late 70s that she began to submit short stories to various journals and magazines.

Since becoming an octogenarian, she has written and published three books.
