An estimated 1,400 visitors streamed onto Shelby Farms grounds Sunday to enjoy the day and capture collectible digital creatures.
The crowds were playing Pokémon Go, a location-based game people can play on their smartphones. The game debuted this month and has caught on like wildfire.
Organizers said the park has plenty of rare Poké-mon for people to try and collect.
People are getting brisk walks with the game, although some criticize it for creating more distracted walkers than ever as players keep peering at their phones while exercising.
Nationally, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has issued a caution for “digital deadwalkers,” those people who are so focused on their phone screens that they are oblivious to obstacles and people nearby.
In a press release, Philadelphia-based orthopedic surgeon and AAOS spokesperson Dr. Alan S. Hilibrand said, “We love that these games are bringing children and adults outdoors and encouraging exercise. But we also want everyone to be mindful of their surroundings as they enjoy this activity. Walking while looking at your phone or electronic device can result in sprains, broken bones, and other serious, even fatal, injuries.”
