November thefts, assaults continue in Arlington

ARL-SCSO-12-24-15The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) handled the following incidents in Arlington during the second half of November. For earlier November crime reports, see the Dec. 17 issue of The Bartlett Express.

Editor’s note: All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of detailed SCSO reports.

Nov. 16

Airline Road (simple assault/domestic violence)

When an Arlington woman yelled back at her husband during a Nov. 16 argument, he wrapped his hands around her neck, she reported that night.

She yelled at him because she was tired of being called “self-centered” during the argument. She said that, although he put her in a chokehold, he did not squeeze her neck and just held her in the chair in their home on the 4100 block of Airline Road. She did not lose consciousness.

The responding officer saw no bruising or other marks on her neck but took crime scene photos. The husband was not on the scene at the time of the report.

Nov. 17

Airline Road (theft from motor vehicle)

A man reported that someone broke into his truck and stole a weapon on Nov. 17 while his son had parked the vehicle at a fitness center.

The son parked the Ford F150 in the parking lot of ATC Fitness (6050 Airline Rd # 120) around 4:30 p.m. that day. When he returned two hours later, the front passenger window was smashed, and his father’s Springfield Armory Pistol was missing from the truck’s center console.

The father drove the vehicle to the 5500 block of Mary Lane Road, covered the broken window with a tarp and contacted the SCSO. The responding officer did not find a workable crime scene.

ATC Fitness is not equipped with surveillance cameras to cover the area in which the theft happened.

The pistol’s serial number was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database as stolen property.

Chester Street (theft from motor vehicle)A woman reported Nov. 17 that someone broke into her vehicle and stole items while it was in the Town Square parking lot (between Quintard and Chester streets, near the Arlington Senior Citizens Center). She said she parked there around 5:15 p.m., went to the nearby Live Fit Studio and returned around 6:45 p.m.

Someone had broken her vehicle’s passenger-side front window and stolen her purse and prescription sunglasses. The responding officers saw pry marks on the window frame near the locks, where a tool was inserted to break the glass, but they found no fingerprints.

No suspect information is available, and the officers saw no security cameras in the area.

Hidden Trail (aggravated assault/domestic violence)

Officers responded around 11:12 p.m. Nov. 17 to a report of an armed conflict at a home on the 12000 block of Hidden Trail. A woman and her husband told the officers that the woman’s ex-husband and a female victim (his girlfriend) were in a fight inside, and there were small children in the home.

The ex-husband slammed the front door at the officers and refused to open the door or come outside. The officers were there for almost an hour, trying to get the man to emerge. According to the police report, he finally walked out the front door, yelling and cursing at officers. He refused orders to stop approaching the officers so aggressively, so they took him to the ground. He stayed combative while they tried to handcuff him.

The ex-wife said she and her boyfriend had come to the home to pick up her son, and her ex-husband swore at them, said to leave, and threatened death while pointing a Walther handgun at them. The couple feared for their lives. The ex-husband refused to turn over the son.

The suspect’s girlfriend said she and her boyfriend had just returned from his grandmother’s dinner party. She went upstairs while he rested on the living room couch. She came downstairs to prepare school lunches for the two children in the home, but her boyfriend swore at her and told her to go back upstairs. She continued working on the lunches, so the suspect hit her in the face.

The girlfriend retreated upstairs, called the ex-wife and asked her to pick up the children. She said the suspect then came upstairs, choked the breath out of her and pushed her through a shower door. She said she asked him several times to release her and the boys from the house, but he refused.

The suspect said he drank several beers and a “fireball” alcoholic beverage at his grandmother’s house. He also said an argument between him and his girlfriend turned physical. He refused to explain what the argument was about.

A crime scene deputy took photos of the bruises on the girlfriend’s neck and body. A fire engine and ambulance arrived on scene, but she refused medical treatment.

Officers saw the reported handgun in plain sight on a table in the living room. They also spotted some suspected marijuana in plain sight in an opened drawer in an upstairs bedroom, and they weighed the leafy green substance at 3.33 total gram weight. They seized both the weapon and the suspected illegal drug.

Regional One’s medical staff treated and cleared the suspect. Officers then took him to the Shelby County Jail for aggravated assault (domestic violence) and drugs charges.

Nov. 19

Airline Road (theft from building)

An employee at Taco Bell (4935 Airline Road) reported on Nov. 19 that $95 was missing from an evening deposit a couple of weeks earlier.

Her corporate headquarters had just notified her that the money was missing from the Nov. 4 evening deposit. She named the evening manager on duty that night and said she had recently quit. She also named two minors who were also on duty then and who are still employed at the restaurant.

The money was missing from the daily report before the evening’s deposit was ever dropped into the safe, she said. The business does not have surveillance cameras.

Lamb Road (simple assault/domestic violence)

A sister reported that her brother’s girlfriend assaulted him on Nov. 19. She said her brother and the girlfriend were arguing in the driveway around 8:30 p.m. when the girlfriend pushed him and drove off in a Nissan Sentra. The sister heard the disturbance but did not see it happen.

The home is on the 5600 block of Lamb Road.

Officers didn’t see any injuries on the brother, and he refused medical treatment. Officers did not make contact with the girlfriend.

Nov. 20

Airline Road (misdemeanor weapon law violations)

An Arlington High School student who brought a purple butterfly knife to school on Nov. 17 to show it off had to face an officer on Nov. 20 when it was reported to the SCSO. The suspect received a juvenile summons for possession of a weapon on school property and was suspended for 180 school days.

Lamb Road

A woman (Victim 1) reported on Nov. 20 that her brother was arguing with her sister (Victim 2) about a cell phone he wanted from the residence on the 5600 block of Lamb Road. Victim 1 said he pushed a one-year-old nephew to the floor because he was angry with her and Victim 2.

Victim 1 said her brother punched her on the right side of her face when she spoke to him about cussing around the children and pushing one of them down. Victim 2 backed up her statement.

Victim 1 refused medical treatment from an ambulance that arrived, and so did Victim 2 on behalf of the one-year-old. This is the same household mentioned in a Nov. 19 altercation, also on Lamb Road.

Nov. 23

Elderton Drive (felony vandalism)

Someone vandalized a home under construction on the 12400 block of Elderton Drive between 4:30 p.m. Nov. 20 and 12:30 p.m. Nov. 23. Damages included a stainless steel sink where a small fire may have been built, two smashed windows, and about 144 square feet of floor tile covered in latex paint. There are no known suspects.

Shaws Ridge Trail (identity theft)

A woman living on the 4900 block of Shaws Ridge Trail reported identity theft on Nov. 23. She said someone used her personal information to open credit card accounts and rack up charges totaling at least $2,714.19, with amounts still pending from several accounts. She did not have any suspect information.

Retailers and amounts included Goody’s, three charges on Nov. 7-8 totaling $778.05; Victoria’s Secret, two charges on Nov. 7 totaling $537.58; and T.J. Maxx, four charges on Nov. 7-9 totaling $1,398.56.

At the time of the report, there were unknown transactions pending from accounts with Best Buy, Kohl’s, Gymboree Visa and Academy Sports.

Someone also tried using the victim’s information to get credit with Belk, Torrid and Pier 1 Imports on Nov. 9; Children’s Place on Nov. 12; and Nordstrom Bank on Nov. 13.

All accounts used the victim’s previous address on Armistead Street.

Nov. 24

Airline Road (counterfeiting/forgery)

A Triumph Bank officer reported on Nov. 24 that a female customer had deposited a check that turned out to be fraudulent.

The original deposit was a $2,300 cashier’s check from Clay County Bank, deposited Nov. 13 into a checking account at the Arlington branch of Triumph Bank (5810 Airline Road). The suspect returned less than an hour later and tried to make a withdrawal but couldn’t because funds were not available. She went inside the bank and had a teller make the funds immediately available.

She then left and began withdrawing money by debit card, the complainant reported.

On Monday, Nov. 16, the other bank advised that the check was counterfeit and would be returned to Triumph.

Triumph personnel’s numerous attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful. The responding detective also tried unsuccessfully to contact the woman on her home phone and cell phone.

Nov. 29

Longleaf Oak Trail (threatening phone call)

A female resident on the 12300 block of Longleaf Oak Trail (Victim 1) reported a string of threats dating back to Sept. 23 for a male (Victim 2) in the home. The suspect said someone broke into his home on that date, and he blamed Victim 2.

She said the suspect met with Victim 2 around Sept. 23 for breakfast. The suspect believed that the meeting was a distraction so he would leave his home unguarded.

She spoke with the suspect on Nov. 25, who said he was going to hurt Victim 2 instead of pressing charges. She tried arguing that the suspect would then be stuck with medical bills, but he said, “There won’t be any medical bills.”

She asked him if that was a death threat, and the suspect commented, “I’ve already said too much.”

Both victims started receiving texts from the suspect shortly after 1 a.m. Nov. 29 saying, “You will pay,” calling Victim 2 a “panzie,” and making other non-specific threats. The suspect was also saying they should meet to settle the issue.

Victim 1 recorded a call between the suspect and Victim 2, in which Victim 2 repeatedly asked what he was suspected of and what he was supposed to pay for. The suspect would only say, “You know what you did,” and then he disconnected the call.

Victim 1 said she fears for her family’s safety.
