Memphis-area residents and visitors to the Bluff City had a special opportunity on Monday to honor civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and learn about their nation’s history.
The National Civil Rights Museum celebrated MLK Day on Jan. 18 with discounted entrance fees of $5 and a full day of attractions.
On the theme of “Speaking Truth to Power,” the facility featured live music and performances by spoken word artists, a children’s pavilion with fun learning opportunities, and the museum experience. The tour includes the new exhibit, “Cultural Heroes,” a series of gigantic sculptures that pay tribute to musicians who were key role players during the Civil Rights Movement.
Visitors also could participate in a voter registration drive, hear special guests and media personalities, and enjoy treats from food vendors.
Those who brought food bank donations of non-perishable items received a $2 admission discount that was good for that day only. Others who donated blood to Lifeblood on site received free admission for up to four people.
