In a listing of 2015’s “Best and Worst Metro Areas for STEM Professionals,” the Memphis area ranked just 86th in the top 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas in the U.S., according to an analysis by WalletHub.com.
To help STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) professionals find the best job markets, WalletHub analyzed those metro areas across 11 key metrics.
The data includes such metrics as job openings per capita for STEM graduates, annual median wage growth for STEM jobs and the projected number of STEM jobs needed in 2018.
According to the Department of Commerce estimates, STEM professions will expand 1.7 times faster than non-STEM occupations between 2008 and 2018.
The annual average wage for all STEM jobs was $79,640 in 2013, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported this past April. That’s 71 percent more than the national annual average wage of $46,440 for all jobs.
