As part of MIFA’s March for Meals Champion Month, Bartlett Vice Mayor Jack Young served lunch on March 4 at Bartlett Senior Center, one of two MIFA’s congregate nutrition sites in the Bartlett area.
During the month of March, MIFA is participating in this national campaign initiated by the Meals on Wheels Association of America to raise awareness of senior hunger. The champions who are delivering meals include local government officials and other community leaders.
Each weekday, MIFA serves hot lunches to 81 seniors at the Bartlett Senior Center and to 146 clients at North Lake Apartments located at 5190 Wesley Park Dr.
There are 15 congregate meals sites throughout Shelby County, primarily where seniors live or gather.
MIFA’s Meals on Wheels program, established in 1976, serves 1,600 local seniors five days a week by delivering hot nutritious meals to homebound elderly and to congregate sites. The program’s clients are nutritionally at-risk seniors (over age 60) due to illness or disability.
MIFA’s Meals on Wheels is accredited through the Meals on Wheels Association of America’s Magnet Accreditation Program, a prestigious group of senior nutrition programs across the country dedicated to providing quality nutrition services at the highest level of organizational accountability.
In a recent survey of MIFA’s home-delivered meals clients, 94 percent reported eating healthier foods; 96 percent reported meals help them stay in their homes and 92 percent feel better overall.
