A man died in a fire that destroyed a Lakeland home Monday morning.

Multiple callers reported the fire around 10:30 a.m. Monday at 3242 Old Trail Cove, and the first engine responded by 10:35 a.m., according to Brent Perkins, the Shelby County Fire Department’s public information officer. Engines from three fire departments — Shelby County, Arlington and Memphis — battled the blaze.

When they arrived, the fire was already through the roof and burning throughout the entire width of the house, he said, and it appeared to have been burning for some time.

On a secondary search of the structure, firefighters found a man inside who had succumbed to the heat and flames
They believe the victim to be a 66-year-old man who lived alone, but the body has not yet been identified, and the medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death, Perkins said.

Investigators are also still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

More detailed information was not available by press time on Tuesday.

The Shelby County tax assessor’s website lists the owners of that Old Trail Cove property as Jerry Stamson Jr. and Wilma Stamson.
