Lakeland sets term limits for mayor and commissioners

Lakeland logoLakeland’s city board unanimously approved setting term limits for the mayor and commissioners at their Aug. 13 meeting after lengthy discussions.

Going forward, future mayors and commissioners may serve a lifetime limit of two terms.

By a majority, the board also approved going forward with condemnation proceedings for one of the four or five properties still blocking widening of New Canada Road. Commissioner Randy Nicholson voted no.

However, board members are discussing ways to keep the project from carving too much of a swath through a neighborhood without having to give back state road work funding already received and spent. They will explore what options are possible for a re-design.
