Lakeland budget tweaks: Nutrition gets more attention for 2015-16

LSS logoAt Monday’s meeting, Lakeland’s school board approved forming an ethics committee, approved the fine-tuned special funds budget for 2015-16, and approved the attendance policy.

The nutrition budget that was higher than anticipated during the district’s school year is slowly becoming more lean, Superintendent Ted Horrell reported, but it will continue to get tweaked in the upcoming school year.

The nutrition budget will get $10,000 more school lunches will go up from $2.75 to $3, some strategic choices will focus on the best-liked nutritious foods and removing some alternatives, and staffing will be shifted to change a full-time position to a part-time one, saving in personnel costs.

The board also made adjustments to its meeting schedule for the upcoming school year, including one change for next month, when observers expect to see final budget adjustments as well as discussions on what’s next in plans to educate middle and high school students in Lakeland in the wake of the failed bond referendum. The work session will remain on June 1, and the business meeting (originally planned for June 8) will move to June 3.
