Two brothers who attained the rank of Eagle Scout at the same time were recently honored by Bartlett mayor Keith McDonald. Home-schoolers Jacob Jones, 15, and Andrew Jones, 16, are the sons of Scott and Diane Jones of Bartlett.
For their projects to earn the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, the two worked together on a 500-foot stretch of fence near Faith Baptist Church’s recreation fields in Bartlett, at Buckhead Creek, U.S. 70 and North Germantown Road. Each youth was in charge of pulling down brush and replacing 250 feet of the eight-foot-tall fencing.
The work included getting Scout board and council approval, recruiting people to help, organizing the volunteer efforts, documenting the work and securing funding. The church provided the fence materials, and the Scouts provided the tools and labor.
Their father, Scott Jones, said, “Basically, they were proving they could lead and manage a project.”
For Jacob, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout was about following Scout law. “I think that’s a way of life. You don’t go half in. I think God has blessed us with time to do Boy Scouts, and we have great leaders. It’s a real blessing to be in the Boy Scouts.”
Andrew nodded as his brother spoke, and he added his own perspective. “It’s just built my character. I want to be a good person and serve my community. I know it’ll help me as I go through life.”
