Hospital to offer heart-healthy seminars

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. The good news is that heart disease is both preventable and controllable. During the month of February, also known as American Heart Month, Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett will be offering the community free heart healthy seminars to help raise awareness of heart health.

All seminars will be in the Magnolia Room at Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett. To register, call (901) 820-7022.

  • “How Diabetes Affects Your Heart”: Lecture and snacks at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 13. Heart disease affects people with diabetes approximately twice as much as those without diabetes. Dr. Kashif Latif will discuss the steps diabetics can take to help reduce their risk of heart disease. Heart healthy/diabetes friendly snacks will be served.
  • “Heart Healthy Eating and Cooking Demonstration”: Cooking demo and samples at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 18. One of the most important things you can do to prevent heart disease is change to a heart-healthy diet. Registered dietician Lisa Abbay will explain what you can do to make this change and still enjoy great tasting food. Chef Bryan Black will provide a cooking demonstration. Heart-healthy snacks, recipes, and samples from the chef’s creations will be available.
  • “Seniors and Coronary Heart Disease”: Seminar at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 25, limited to people 50 or older. Dr. Forrest Ward  will discuss risk factors and symptoms or coronary artery disease in seniors. He will also discuss lifestyle changes that can help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
