Gracias Choir to perform free cantata oct. 8

Gracias Choir's Christmas CantataGracias Choir, an international award-winning choral and orchestral group, will perform its signature “Gracias Christmas Cantata,” a three-stage musical Christmas concert, in Memphis on Oct. 8.

Admission is free for the 7 p.m. performance at the Cannon Convention Center for Performing Arts, 255 N Main St.

The cantata includes a moving opera, a contemporary musical play and a choral ensemble, all on one stage. The live musical performance features a 100-person choir and orchestra, detailed backdrops, costumes and special effects for each act. Conductor Boris Abalyan is an honored artist of Russia and choral conducting professor at the St. Petersburg National Conservatory of Music. The Gracias Choir has performed for capacity audiences and heads-of-state around the globe. This year the Gracias Choir was awarded the Grand Prize at the Riva del Garda International Choral Competition in Italy and First Prize at the Montreaux Choral Festival in Switzerland.

This year’s US Tour is presented by the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) in partnership with the Gracias Choir. IYF is a non-profit Christian-based global youth initiative. Gracias Choir is an international choir and orchestra affiliated with the IYF.
