Area services honor military vets Nov. 11

Take time time to thank a veteran on Nov. 11 for serving the United States.

See our related stories this week about honoring veterans through a Bartlett ceremony, a play honoring Medal of Honor recipients, and Woodland Presbyterian Schools’ visitation by a WWII veteran (and the upcoming chapel program there).

Donors sought for local vets’ nursing home

West Tennessee Veterans Home Inc.Untitled-1 (WTVH) is launching Project 100, which aims to raise $100 for each veteran in the tri-county area with help from organizations, churches, employers, other groups and individuals.

There are more than 71,000 veterans living in Shelby, Fayette and Tipton counties.

With Project 100, WTVH is providing everyone in the tri-county area an opportunity to help support this project by joining together and raising $100 for every Veteran in their midst. Every organization of every kind, every employer and every entity in the tri-county area is being invited to participate in this endeavor.

Ifevery type of entity in the tri-county area — from municipal governments to churches to the various organizations — were each to raise $100 for every vet in their midst (or to honor vets in the broader community), this could raise a substantial amount toward the local goal of $23 million for the actual construction, which is planned for 2017.

In recognition of those who are successful in this campaign, WTVH will list these names on its Honor Roll on the WTVH Facebook page and web site and present a certificate designating the recipient as a Guardian Eagle. If an individual or family wishes to honor a particular Veteran with a $100 donation, these contributions will also be recognized with an appropriate Guardian Eagle certificate.

For details, go online to facebook.com/WestTNVeteransHome or veterans-home.com, or write to P.O. Box 655, Cordova, TN 38088-0655. WTVH is a 501 (c) (3) organization.

Lakeland to offer Dessert Mystery Theatre Nov. 7

Lakeland senior citizens will perform “Dastardly Deed at Dry Gulch” for Dessert Mystery Theater on Nov. 7 in Lakeland.

Who killed the sheriff — the mail-order bride, the gambler, or the bandito? It could even have been the saloon gal, the dear old doc who drinks just the littlest too much or even the school marm.

Attendees can guess as they travel back to old west times to solve this mystery, and they are invited to wear their best cowgirl/cowboy look. Dessert will be served, and door prizes will be offered. The event is open to the public, and admission is by donation.

The event will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the International Harvester Clubhouse, 4523 Canada Road, Lakeland. For more information, email Jeanne at cakie_hamilton95@aol.com or call (901) 867-2717.
