Heat wave will make rolling blackouts likely

This week’s forecasted extreme temperatures increase the likelihood of rolling blackouts for Arlington, Lakeland and surrounding areas affected by the lost of service from MLGW Substation 68.

An MLGW spokesman said the measure may be necessary during the peak hours of 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to balance the power load and protect the electric distribution system from damage.

An explosion and fire on July 11 took out the substation, nd MLGW has been working around the clock to get the facility up and running again.

Rolling blackouts are unprecedented in recent MLGW history but may be needed until Substation 68 returns to service on or before Aug. 8. If needed, blackouts, lasting about 4 hours, would rotate between sections — not entire cities —in order to balance power loads during peak hours.
