Come to Jan. 12 Christmas tree bonfire in Cordova
Bring your dry Xmas tree to a bonfire this year. The Grove at Red Oak Lake is hosting a bonfire that kicks off at 8:15 p.m. Jan. 12.
The Grove, formerly known as Camp Cordova, is a multipurpose full-service camp, conference center and retreat at 849 Rock Point Road in Cordova. The property is owned by Faith Baptist Church in Bartlett. See more information about the site at mygrove.org.
Shelby County Mayor opens meetings for citizens’ input on Jan. 14
Shelby County Mayor Mark H. Luttrell Jr. continues his one-on-one meetings with citizens this month to listen to their comments and suggestions. The next session will be 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Vasco A. Smith Jr. Administration Building at 160 N. Main St., Suite 1100, Memphis.
“These visits give me the opportunity to speak personally with people about what’s important to them and how their ideas might improve our community,” said Mayor Luttrell.

Bartlett author signing books at Jan. 18 event
Deren Whalen, a resident of Bartlett, will sign copies of his novel, “What Is the Color of Hate?” from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Jan. 18 at Republic Coffee, 2924 Walnut Grove Road, Memphis.
The book is about a man who grows up with hate, fear and anger toward the black men responsible for his father’s death in a violent home invasion. His racial hatred ultimately leads him to a terrible choice with tragic consequences. Whalen’s press release states, “‘What is the Color of Hate?’ is a powerful story of anger, hate, love—and ultimately forgiveness—with the message of God’s grace and mercy skillfully woven throughout.”
