Germantown police have arrested a Bartlett man suspected of burglarizing vehicles in the Poplar Estates neighborhood.
Anthony M. Hunt, 35, of Bartlett is charged with three counts of auto burglary, one count of aggravated burglary, evading arrest possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal impersonation and possession of stolen property. Hunt also had an outstanding Shelby County warrant for aggravated assault.
Attempts to flee
A resident on the 1700 block of East Churchill Downs in Germantown called the city’s police department at 10:15 p.m. Jan. 21 about a stolen bicycle and an auto burglary.
The victim was alerted to the theft by the motion sensor light in his garage and noticing that gloves and a bicycle were missing.
The responding office saw a black male wearing dark clothing run through a back yard in the 1600 block of West Churchill Downs. The missing bicycle and gloves were recovered nearby.
Officers set up a perimeter and requested help from the Shelby County Dog Squad. Despite a search, they did not locate the suspect.
Then, early on Jan. 22, a resident in the 1500 block of West Churchill Downs called police about an unknown black male who he spotted asleep in his car.
The man, dressed in dark clothes, fled the scene. Officers set up a perimeter.
Officers got another call around 7:15 a.m. Jan. 22 about a man matching the suspect’s description. He reportedly approached a homeowner in the area of Bell Manor and Riverdale, saying his car had broken down. He was requesting help.
Officers took the man into custody at 7:20 a.m. at Bell Manor and Manor Woods Cove.
What’s next
The investigation is continuing and additional charges are possible against Hunt. Bond has been set at $350,000. Hunt will appear in Germantown Municipal Court on Feb. 18.
The Germantown Police issued a statement of thanks to the Poplar Estates community for their cooperation. “We received several calls during the incident that helped us make the arrest,” said deputy chief Rodney Bright.
