After five seasons at the helm of the Houston High School football team, Will Hudgens announced Wednesday that he has accepted a job at St. Benedict at Auburndale as the offensive coordinator for the varsity football team.
St. Benedict Athletic Director Caleb Marcum announced that Hudgens will join his former coach John Cooley next season.
Cooley, who is currently the head coach for the Eagles, coached Hudgens to a state championship at Ridgeway in 2002.
“We’re excited to have Coach Hudgens as our offensive coordinator,” Marcum said. “His legacy needs no introduction, as he is well known in the Memphis area. It’s great, too, that he can coach with his former high school Coach John Cooley.”
Cooley said, “Will is a great coach and we are pleased and excited to have him on our staff. His level of expertise both as a player and a coach is outstanding. He did a tremendous job at Houston and I’m really looking forward to working with him again.”
He compiled a 29-26 record with the Mustangs in five seasons and guided them to the playoffs each year. He said he will be rooting for the Mustangs, but stressing, “It’s just a great opportunity for me to work under my old coach.”
While Hudgens will be working full-time at SBA, he plans to further his education.
While coaching at Houston, Hudgens led the Mustangs to 29-26 record. His best season was 2014, when he and standout quarterback Jared Schmidt helped the team achieve a 10-2 record.
The Mustangs had a 6-5 record last season and were knocked out of the Class 6A playoffs in the first round by Germantown.
