
The family of a Bartlett native, the late Sgt. Walter K. Singleton, gathered in his honor at the recent USMC birthday ball hosted by the Marine Corps League that bears his name.
Attendees at the 240th annual event included his extended family (shown at left): Front row, Dawn Hunter and Cindy Singleton; second row, Richard Murphy, Carolyn Singleton Murphy, Kierstynn Hunter, Nate Hunter, Mary Singleton, and Robert Singleton; and back row, Dawson Jones, Lucy Singleton Harvey, Richard Harvey and Bobby Singleton.
Singleton was a Medal of Honor winner and a recipient of the Purple Heart, among other military honors. He graduated from Bartlett High in 1963.
He died on March 24, 1967, in the Gio Linh District, Quang Tri Province of Vietnam, after advancing from his relatively safe position in the rear to move the wounded. He killed eight enemy and drove the remainder away before losing his life.
