For the second time in six years, a driver smashed through the front glass wall of the Family Christian book store in Bartlett Sunday afternoon. No one was injured in the crash.
Anita Smith, 66, a Memphis resident, accidentally jumped the curb in her 2014 Hyundai Elantra and crashed into the store at Bartlett Town Center, 6025 Stage Road, #36.
The momentum took her almost all the way through the store’s retail floor space.
Store personnel said that, although there were customers browsing at the time of the accident, no one was in the immediate area of the crash.
The accident occurred around 12:45 p.m. Sunday.
Store manager Charles Zuber was not present at the time of the accident, but he arrived shortly after he was called, and he got firsthand reports from personnel who saw the incident unfold.
Daniel Ford, a bookstore employee who was working the cash register and who witnessed the accident, told Zuber, “It was like seeing an action movie in real life.”
Zuber said a similar accident six years ago also damaged the store and its contents, but again there were no injuries.
He said he is still evaluating the extent of damages to the store’s merchandise and its display fixtures.
The landlord was not immediately available for comment on Monday to estimate damage costs or comment on whether traffic barriers will be put in place to protect the building and customers now that this same type of accident has happened twice.
