The Tennessee House of Represent-atives passed House Bill 779, the controversial “de-annexation” bill, by a vote of 68-25 on Monday.
Now headed to the Senate, it could go to a vote as early as Thursday.
If passed, the bill would allow residents of six cities, including Memphis, to deannex their communities. The other cities are Chattanooga, Kingsport, Knoxville, Johnson City and Cornersville.
The bill could be costly if de-annexations proceed, with cities losing revenue and services possibly being affected.
