Collegiate Corner for July 10, 2014

The following colleges and universities have released their lists of honor students and graduates for the spring 2014 semester.

Honors

Arkansas State University: Teresa Murphree of Lakeland was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Murphree was initiated at Arkansas State University. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Austin Peay State University: Ashlee Dover of Bartlett was among the honorees this spring at the annual Student Organization and Leader Awards Program at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn. The purpose of the program is to recognize students, student organizations, faculty and staff who have made significant contributions throughout the year both on and off campus.

Augustana College: Andra Guzzo of Bartlett was named to the Dean’s List of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., for the spring semester of the 2013-2014 academic year. The Dean’s List recognizes full-time students who have a minimum of 12 credit hours with grade-point averages at 3.5 or above.

Birmingham-Southern College: Caitlin McCurdy of Bartlett has been named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2014 term at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Ala. The list recognizes students who have been enrolled full-time, received a letter grade for each of the courses in which he or she was enrolled, and earned at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

Bob Jones University: Mary Hale, a sophomore music education major of Bartlett, was named to the spring 2014 Dean’s List at Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must earn a 3.0 grade point average.

The Citadel: Cadet John Palmer of Bartlett was among the members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets named to the Dean’s List at the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina (Charleston, S.C.) for the spring 2014 semester. Dean’s List recognition is earned by full-time students with grade point ratios of 3.2 or higher and with no grade below a C for the previous semester’s work. He was also named to the Citadel’s spring 2014 Gold Stars List for academic achievements during the spring semester.

Emory University: Yao Tan of Bartlett was named to the Merit List of Oxford College, the two-year liberal arts division of Emory University in Oxford, Ga., for the 2014 spring semester. Students must earn a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the previous semester to be named to the Merit List.

Lincoln Memorial University: Kimberly Chaffin of Arlington was named to the Dean’s List at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., for the spring semester of 2014. To be placed on the Dean’s List, the student must be a full-time undergraduate and have a 3.5 grade point average for the semester.

Mississippi College: Sarah Berry of Bartlett has been named to the President’s List at Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., for the spring 2014 semester. Nicole Hardison of Arlington has been named to the college’s Dean’s List for the spring 2014 semester. To be eligible for the President’s List, a student must maintain a 4.0 grade point average, based on a 4.0 system. To be eligible for the Dean’s List, a student must maintain a 3.5 or better grade point average, based on a 4.0 system. For either of these academic honors lists, the student must take a full course load of at least 12 semester hours of undergraduate credit with all academic courses impacting their grade point average.

Mississippi State University: Anna Matheny and Kelsey Huggins, both of Lakeland, has been initiated recently into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. They are students at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Miss. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Missouri University of Science and Technology: Patrick Murphy of Bartlett, a freshman in engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo., has been named to the honor list for the 2014 spring semester. To be included on the honor list, students must have carried a minimum of 12 hours and had grade point averages of 3.2 or above out of a possible 4.0.

Northwest Mississippi Community College: The following area students have been named to the President’s list at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, Miss., for the spring 2014 semester: Kristi Dimarco of Arlington; and Breanne Francis, Zachary Parker and Ashlee Rogers, all of Bartlett. Thomas Hollenbach of Arlington was named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2014 semester. Those students completing 12 or more semester hours with a grade point average of 3.75 or better in a four-point system are on the President’s List. The Dean’s List includes students completing a minimum of 12 semester hours with a 3.50 to 3.74 average.

Rhodes College: Jessica A. Baker of Lakeland was named to the Rhodes College Dean’s List for the 2014 spring semester. To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must be enrolled in at least 16 credit hours of academic work and must achieve a semester grade point average of 3.70 or better. She is a graduate of First Assembly Christian School.

Samford University: The following students were named to the Dean’s List for Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., for the spring 2014 semester: Jane K. Eggenberger of Lakeland, a nursing major in the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, and Ezekeil D. Walters of Arlington, a sport administration major in the School of Health Professions.

Southern Methodist University: Devin Wells of Bartlett was named to the spring 2014 honor roll at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Trevecca Nazarene University: The following students have been named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2014 semester of Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville: Mary Duckhorn, a senior organizational communication major, and Jessica Gabrielson, a senior early childhood education major; and Jessica Waters, a senior exercise science major, all of Arlington; Hope Kenerly, a senior interdisciplinary major of Bartlett; and Ashley Bradshaw, a senior social work major of Lakeland. Students must achieve a minimum 3.5 grade point average for the semester to be named to the Dean’s List.

University of Alabama: Katherine Love has been initiated recently into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. She is a student at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

University of Mississippi: Emily Hugo of Bartlett has been initiated recently into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. She is a student at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. University of Tennessee at Martin: Sara Christopher of Arlington has been initiated recently into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. She is a student at UT-Martin. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Graduates

Austin Peay State University: Dennis Wathen of Bartlett graduated from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., at its 85th Spring Commencement ceremony this spring.

The Citadel: John Taylor Palmer of Bartlett graduated as a member of The Citadel’s Class of 2014 as a member of the S.C. Corps of Cadets. The Citadel is located in Charleston, S.C.

Emory University: The following area students graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., at the 169th commencement ceremony: Yao Tan of Bartlett, Associate of Arts from Oxford College, and Courtney Wolfe of Lakeland, Doctor of Law from the School of Law.

Georgia Tech: Jacob Conroy of Bartlett graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Ga., with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering at the spring commencement ceremony.

Harding University: The following area students graduated from Harding University in Searcy, Ark., at the spring commencement exercises: Sara Squires of Arlington, Doctor of Pharmacy degree; Jordan McBride of Arlington, Bachelor of Arts in communication sciences and disorders; and Jordan Creamer of Arlington, Bachelor of Science in athletic training.

Lincoln Memorial University: Kimberly Chaffin of Arlington, TN, graduated from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at the spring commencement exercises.

New England College: Antoinette David of Cordova graduated from New England College in Henniker, N.H., with a Master of Science in Forensic Accounting at the spring 2014 commencement ceremony.
