Chris Wood Construction lands $41.4M airport job

Chris Wood Construction Co. Inc. in Bartlett has won a large Memphis airport construction project with a low bid of $41.4 million to construct a multifunctional building. The Airfield Maintenance & Operations Support Facility will be built on the site of the former Gate Gourmet building on Louis Carruthers Drive.

The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority’s Board of Commissioners awarded the construction contract at its May 17 meeting. The Bartlett-based contractor was the lowest bidder that met all requirements.

The new concrete structure will house, airfield maintenance, warehouse and operations officers, police and communications dispatch. Coming in a little under 200,000 square feet, the project includes about 120,000 square feet of maintenance space, another 60,000 for an equipment canopy and about 15,000 for bulk storage. It will be a utilitarian building for internal use only, not for the public.

The project’s contract includes a 7 percent contingency amount that totals $2.9 million.

The work is expected to start in late June and finish in about 16 months.

A Chris Wood Construction spokesman said one of the factors that distinguished their bid, other than price, was that they have a good working relationship with the airport based on several past and current projects.

The building’s designers were Horrell Group Architects and Self Tucker Architects. Engineers include the Pickering Firm Inc., Jamnu H. Tahiliani and Associates, DePouw Engineering, BCM – Barham/Cain/Mynatt and the Faith Group LLC.

Another big project recently awarded to Chris Wood Construction comes from FedEx. The work is valued at $2,563,000 for the replacement of all mechanical equipment at the TAB Building at their Memphis hub.

The FedEx project’s work will involve the replacement of HVAC systems on all three office levels as well as computer room cooling units and rooftop equipment. Work is expected to start in late June and be completed in approximately six months.
