Chalk the Walk creates colorful sidewalk beauty

Artists braved fierce summer heat Friday to create sidewalk art with brilliant shades of chalk at BPACC. They competed for honors in the Bartlett Art Council event, Chalk the Walk. [dropcap]The[/dropcap] popular “Chalk the Walk” competition of sidewalk art sprawled across the sidewalks last Friday in front of the Bartlett Performing Arts and Conference Center.

The event took place in conjunction with BPACC’s free “Music by the Lake” concert series on June 8. People walking to and from that event stopped to admire the brightly colored chalk drawings and vote with their donations to the Bartlett Arts Council.

The People’s Choice Awards went to Tina Clark, first place; Jabriel Woodall, second place; and Rayne Laughlin, third place.

Donations for all the artists’ work plus support from sponsors raised about $2,300. The funds will be used to promote art in the Bartlett community.

Sponsors this year were Wiemar’s Jewelry, Higginbotham Family Dentists, Memphis Funeral Home and Dr. Tim Hacker, who was also one of the artists.

The featured artist (not included in the competition) was Chantel Barber, Bartlett resident and portraiture artist with an international reputation. Bartlett High School also contributed several student artists as well as the work of BHS art teacher Becky Bowers. Several artists from the Bartlett Art Association also participated.

There was no charge for the artists to take part in Chalk the Walk.

Local civic organizations, individuals and businesses sponsored artists, and lunches were donated by LaChiq Catering and Baby Jack’s BBQ.
