New city school districts get slice of Shelby County capital spending

The Shelby County Commission squeezed $4.8 million into its $52.2 million capital spending plan to cover some capital improvement project (CIP) requests for the area’s new municipal school districts.
The added funding covers the following projects for facilities that will soon be part of Bartlett, Arlington and Lakeland districts:
Arlington Elementary, cafeteria and kitchen re-roofing: $40,000- Arlington Elementary, HVAC controls: $88,000
- Arlington Elementary, HVAC replacement: $300,000
- Arlington High, gym re-roofing: $80,000
- Arlington High, painting: $342,000
- Lakeland Elementary, re-roofing: $750,000
- Lakeland Elementary, replace 83 HVAC units, $240,000
- Rivercrest Elementary in Bartlett, re-roofing: $990,000
Bartlett superintendent David Stephens said the funding is a welcome start in the right direction for Bartlett schools, and he hopes that next year the county commission will take another look at the municipal school districts and provide more funding.
“We’re happy that we’re getting some dollars, but I know we’re going to have some needs,” Stephens said.
Lakeland superintendent Dr. Ted Horrell said, “This funding will go a long way in making sure our students have a safe, comfortable environment in which to learn and grow.”
A spokesman for the Arlington district was not immediately available for comment.
