Astronomical Society to meet on March 4

The Memphis Astronomical Society will meet at 8 p.m. on March 4 at Christian Brothers University.

The program will focus on two topics: The consortium relationship developed last year between the Memphis Astronomical Society and Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in Millington, and a demonstration of Stellarium, a widely used free planetarium program. People are encouraged to download it and bring their laptops to the meeting.

Note: Some security programs, such as Webroot, will give the “danger” message regarding this program, but the speaker said he has used multiple versions from multiple sources without problems. Use Version 14.1 or higher.

The meeting will be in Room 155 of the Assisi Hall Science Auditorium on the campus, located at East Parkway South and Central Avenue.

Military show imports Vietnam Wall exhibit

The Mid-South Military History & Civil War Show will be March 5-6 at the Agricenter Show Place Arena, 105 S. Germantown Parkway, Cordova. The event features more than 200 dealers with items representing the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, WWI and WWII. Items on display will include books, relics, currency, documents, prints, weapons, uniforms, photographs, vehicles, memorabilia and more.

The Vietnam Traveling Tribute, “The Wall,” will be at the event, available to the public free of charge 24/7. The 360-foot-long tribute contains the names of 58,272 deceased military veterans.

The weekend’s events will include a veterans tribute and ceremony and eight of the country’s top historians in a historical lecture mini-series.

Among the speakers will be Al Arnold, author of “Robert E. Lee’s Orderly: A Modern Black Man’s Confederate Journey.”

Re-enactors will also be on hand for demonstrations and hourly cannon firings during the show.

The schedule includes:

  • Motorcade gathering at Southland Greyhound Park, West Memphis, at 3 p.m. March 2, with “The Wall” crossing the river at 3:30 p.m. with a full military escort to the Agricenter.
  • Opening ceremony at the Agricenter, noon March 4
  • The show with hours of 9 a.m.-5 p.m. March 5 and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 6

Admission is $10 for the general public, and military veterans (with military ID) and children ages 12 and younger will be admitted free.

Senior citizens invited to free March 5 seminar

A free seminar on “The 7 Things Every Senior Must Know About Estate Planning and Long-Term Care” will be held at 9:30 a.m. March 5 at Hearthside Senior Living, 601 Wolf River Blvd., Collierville.

The speaker will be J. Anthony Bardley, an elder law and protection attorney with The Bradley Law Firm PLLC in Germantown.

Topics to be covered include last will or trust, probate, IRA Trust, powers of attorney, VA benefits, Medicaid and privacy. Seating is limited.

Musician William Clark Green to have Memphis debut March 5

Country artist William Clark Green of Texas will perform at 10 p.m. March 5 at Lafayette’s Music Room, 2119 Madison Ave, Memphis. His 2015 album, Ringling Road,was highlighted by Rolling Stone.

Germantown High to host ‘Under the Sea Party’ in March

This spring, children across the Mid-South will get a chance to go “under the sea” with some of their favorite Disney characters. In honor of the regional premiere of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” the Poplar Pike Playhouse at Germantown High School is hosting an “Under the Sea Party with Ariel and Friends.” The event will be at noon March 5 and 12.

The $30 admission includes admission to the performance and a special party before the show where children can interact with the characters. Children will also get to do The Little Mermaid themed crafts, eat lunch with the characters and get a framed picture with Ariel and friends.

Career fair scheduled for March 9

HireLive recruitment services will host a free career fair representing multiple companies 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. March 9 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 5069 Sanderlin Ave., Memphis. Parking will be free.

Attendees are invited to bring 10-15 resumes and wear business-professional attire.

Senior citizens can fine-tune driving skills March 9-10

An AARP Driver Safety Class will be noon-4 p.m. March 9-10, at the Lakeland Senior Center, 4527 Canada Road (adjacent to the I.H. Clubhouse).

Participants age 55 and over will learn new driving strategies, understand the effects of aging on driving, and learn to reduce chances of having a collision, plus much more.

The cost for the class is $15 for AARP members or $20 for nonmembers.

Participants will receive a three-year certificate that may make them eligible for a discount on auto insurance.

Bartlett Business Expo 2016 to open March 10

The 2016 Bartlett Business, Health, Home & Garden Expo will be March 10 at the Bartlett Recreation Center, 7700 Flaherty Place, Bartlett. Hours will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Business professionals find it to be a cost-effective way to showcase their business, and residents enjoy browsing the booths and finding out what’s new and what’s still tried-and-true.

Free health fair planned for March 12

The Healthy Tennessee Free Health Fair will be 11 a.m.-2 p.m. March 12 at the Raleigh Assembly of God, 3683 Austin Peay Highway, Bartlett.

Admission is free, and vendors can host a booth at no charge.

The event features health screenings, meeting with physicians, health-focused exhibitors and the Mid South Food Bank.

The event is sponsored by United Healthcare, Healthy Tennessee, Methodist Health Care, the Mid South Food Bank, and Kroger.
