MAAR honors performers at Pinnacle Awards
The Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Council honored the top performers in commercial real estate for 2018 at the 18th Annual Pinnacle Awards gala held April 3 at the FedEx Event Center at Shelby Farms.
Coming away with the evening’s highest honors were Commercial Hall of Fame inductee Jim Mercer of CBRE and Wyatt Aiken Commercial Broker of the Year winner Tim Mashburn of Colliers International.
The Community Impact Award went to Memphis Rox. The Legacy Award was presented to the family of the late Philip Trenary.

Malco taps David Tashie for president
Memphis-based Malco Theatres has promoted David Tashie to president and chief operating officer. Tashie, son of Co-Chairman Jimmy Tashie and great-grandson of founder M.A. Lightman Sr., began his career with Malco in 1998 and worked his way up through the 102-year old family business.
“We are very excited about the energy and enthusiasm David brings every day and his commitment to the future,” said Bobby Levy, co-chairman. “It is time to hand off more responsibility to the next generation and ensure the continuity of senior management.”
Tashie will continue overseeing the day-to-day operations of the theater chain and bowling/family entertainment centers.
Memphis-based Malco Theatres is a fourth-generation family owned and operated business that reached its 100th anniversary in 2015. Malco Theatres operates more than 350 screens at 34 locations across the Mid-South, as well as bowling and family entertainment centers in Louisiana and Mississippi.
Zev Samuels named TN Social Worker of Year
MIFA’s Zev Samuels has been named as the Tennessee Social Worker of the Year Award. The honor was bestowed by the Tennessee Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
Zev, a professional social worker for over 27 years, is manager of MIFA’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman program and District Long-Term Care Ombudsman with the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability.
Sally Jones Heinz, MIFA president & CEO, said, “With respect and resourcefulness, he advocates for residents of nursing homes, board and care homes, and assisted living facilities in West Tennessee. He works continuously to improve the health and quality of life for seniors, showing genuine compassion for all client populations and offering affirmation and respect for persons with diverse identities.”
Heinz continued, “In his MIFA work, he manages 61 skilled volunteers, who last fiscal year completed 1,280 hours of advocacy work assisting 4,177 seniors in living facilities in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, and Lauderdale counties. We are proud to have Zev leading one of MIFA’s three senior programs designed to promote independence, health, companionship, and dignity.”
MIFA is the Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association, founded in 1968 to support the independence of vulnerable seniors and families in crisis through high-impact programs. It currently serves over 50,000 people annually.
UPS taps TN drivers for Circle of Honor
Can you imagine going 25 years without an accident? What if you had to do it on busy roads, in all kinds of weather, in a large commercial vehicle?
It happens, and UPS says it couldn’t be more proud of its safe drivers. That’s why the Atlanta-based company adds to its prestigious “Circle of Honor” each year to recognize employees who have delivered packages for a quarter of a century without an accident. Forty-one Tennessee drivers are among the 1,436 newly inducted drivers into the company’s elite organization.
The Memphis-area drivers inducted this year to the Circle of Honor include Randy Carter and Gerald Wright, both of Memphis; Joseph King of Arlington; Richard King of Bartlett; Donald Reed and Scott Rittinger, both of Munford; and Charles Westerman Jr. of Atoka.
Globally, 10,364 active UPS drivers are members of the Circle of Honor. Collectively they’ve racked up 298,957 years and 14 billion safe miles during their careers. That’s enough miles to circle the Earth at the equator over half a million times.
Tennessee boasts 321 Circle of Honor drivers with a combined 9,429 years of accident-free driving. William Pyburn of Springfield is the state’s senior-most safe driver, with 42 years of accident-free driving under his belt. There are 2,728 total full-time UPS drivers in Tennessee.

Globally, the most seasoned UPS Circle of Honor driver is Thomas Camp of Livonia, Mich., with 56 years of driving without an accident. Ronald McKnight of Bronx, N.Y., is next in line with 50 years of safe driving. One hundred twenty six others have logged at least 40 years without an accident.
