Boys’ varsity golf team places second in state

In a suspenseful final round, Briarcrest claimed second place in the boys’ varsity golf state championship in early October.

The team was two strokes behind Memphis University School after the final round of the state championship. The final tally was MUS 594 and Briarcrest 596.

Sophomore Drew Miller followed up his round of 68 with an even-par 72 to claim individual champion honors, two ahead of Eli Maxwell from Christian Brothers High School. Senior Ty Kinard continued his play with a 76, including a -1, 35 on his final nine that nearly pushed Briarcrest over the top.

Russell Williamson posted an 81 to complete the team scoring. Blake Templeton shot at 83. Coach Brock Shafer said he was proud of the boys’ strength under pressure and looks forward to seeing most of the team return next year. The final scores for the two day championship:

  • 1st, Drew Miller, 68-72, 140
  • T17, Russell Williamson, 72-81, 153
  • T19, Zach Bailey, 81-73, 154
  • T23, Ty Kinard, 79-76, 155
  • 28th, Blake Templeton, 75-83, 158

Previously, Briarcrest successfully competed in the Regional playoffs versus Christian Brothers High School, Memphis University School and St. Benedict at Auburndale High School at Windyke Country Club’s West course.

After play MUS and Briarcrest were tied at 303. Drew Miller and Zachary Bailey led the team with 2 over par 74 strokes. Ty Kinard finished birdie par par to finish at 76 and bring Briarcrest past CBHS (who finished at 305). This qualified Briarcrest for the state playoffs and into a tie with MUS.

After five playoff holes and two hours extra play, Blake Templeton made a 4-foot par putt to give Briarcrest the regional championship.

As one of the top three Boys’ Division 12 and under players in Tennessee, Briarcrest Christian School seventh-grader Justin Martin was invited to represent Tennessee at the Icy Hot Southern Junior Cup 12’s in Chattanooga Tennessee earlier this fall. Martin played the number three position on a team of three boys and three girls.

He played four singles matches, two boys doubles and two mixed doubles. Martin went undefeated winning all four singles and all four doubles in competition against the other five teams. He was also selected by his team to receive awards for Team Most Valuable Player and Best Sportsmanship.

He said he enjoyed the weekend and was very excited that he was able to successfully compete against his peer age group around the Southern Region, which includes Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky, South Carolina, Alabama, North Carolina and Louisiana.
