“Godspell” opens at the Bartlett Performing Arts and Conference Center on March 9. This BPACC Youth Theatre production started off differently than similar productions in years past.“Godspell” For the first time ever, there was no fee to participate in this full-scale theatrical production. Also, for the first time, the show was cast from open auditions that sought aspiring young performers throughout greater Bartlett/Memphis.
“Godspell” is a musical by the prolific Stephen Schwartz. A few of his other creations include the musicals “Pippin,” “The Baker’s Wife,” “Children of Eden” and the huge Broadway hit “Wicked.” Schwartz also composed the music for animated film hits such as “Pocahontas” and “The Prince of Egypt.”

This musical first opened back in 1971. It has been revived on Broadway at least two times, with the last being 2012. It retells the Gospel of Matthew but sets it in modern-day New York City. The apostles travel the city, spreading the message of Christ through song and dance as the time moves closer to Christ’s betrayal and crucifixion.
“Godspell” has never been a show that used traditional casting. However, this production is unique. For perhaps the first time ever, both Jesus and Judas are played by two young talented actresses. Isabella DeFir brings Jesus to life, while Chloe Carter plays Judas. Both actresses call Bartlett home. The cast is rounded out by 18 other young performers hailing from Bartlett and throughout the Mid-South.

Director Michael Bollinger says, “Regardless of your religious or spiritual beliefs, ‘Godspell’ is quite simply an entertaining show! It is full a humor and has great heart. ‘Godspell’ contains many of Jesus’ positive universal messages on how to live our lives … how to be good human beings. The least being, “Love your enemies and love your neighbor as yourself.” In this day and age, that’s pretty good stuff to keep in mind.”
Bollinger is directing the production. The musical director is Kenny Long, who’s served in that capacity for 50 musicals in the Mid-South. The choreographer is Kimberly Baker of the University of Memphis.
Godspell performances are at 7:30 p.m. on March 9-10 and at 2:30 p.m. on March 11. Tickets are available by calling (901) 385-5588 or by going online to bpacc.org.
