Bolton High names top 2 seniors for 2014

Daniel Moore is a candidate for the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma at Bolton High School and is valedictorian of the senior class of 461 students. He holds a 4.6 grade point average (GPA). In addition to IB classes, he is enrolled in advanced placement (AP) classes his senior year to ensure that he is engaged in challenging curriculum. He has been recognized as a National Merit Finalist on the basis of a score of 2250 on the SAT. He is a well-rounded student who excels in the classroom and in both school and community activities.

Moore was selected for the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Humanities. He attended classes on the University of Tennessee-Martin campus and received enrichment training in writing and in reading the classics. He has also participated in the Word Smith Competition at the University of Memphis and placed second for the past two years in the 100-word dash and 120-word dash.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and National French Honor Society. Moore is also the captain who leads the Bolton Knowledge Bowl team into competition. He is an active member of the Bolton High School Thespian Troupe and was nominated by his peers and elected to the Tennessee Executive Thespian Board.

He has also been selected as the director of the Production One Act Festival. Moore has delivered performances in “Inherit the Wind,” “Father of the Bride” and “Beauty and the Beast,” to name a few. He was one of only two students selected to represent Bolton at the statewide Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation (HOBY) conference, which trains students for school leadership.

Moore has served as a Bolton High School peer tutor for at-risk students for two years and also as a mentor for entering freshmen. In addition, he serves as a Sunday school supervisor as he leads young children in creative activities that help them learn about religion and social concepts.

As a result of his record, Moore has been accepted to and received a full scholarship to the University of Alabama and has been awarded the National Merit Finalist Scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Lance Yu is a candidate for the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma at Bolton High School and is salutatorian of the senior class of 461 students. He maintains a grade point average (GPA) of 4.56.

He shows strength in all disciplines, with a balanced achievement on the SAT of 730 in English, 730 in math and 760 in writing. Academically, he is at the top of his class, and he is a dedicated artist and fluent in French. He wants to pursue a degree in college in business and biotech engineering.

Yu goes far beyond the basic requirements. He is on the Principal’s Honor Roll and a member of the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and National French Honor Society. Yu has also been recognized by the National Society of High School Scholars. He placed fifth in the Memphis citywide chemistry exam. He excels in language, math, science and the humanities.

He has been recognized as a National Merit Finalist by making a 2220 on the SAT. He also scored a 33 on the ACT and was ranked sixth in the nation in the National French Exam. He is in the 30 Plus Club for his outstanding achievement on the ACT.

Yu serves as a mentor to incoming freshmen and as a tutor for at-risk students. He was one of only two students who represented Bolton at the state Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation (HOBY) conference, which helps students develop leadership skills to use at school. He is a member of the Knowledge Bowl team and has competed in both area competitions and on the Channel 3 Knowledge Bowl team. His team finished third in the countywide competition.

In the community, Yu has achieved the rank of first-degree black belt in tae kwon do, and he continually seeks to improve his skills in that area. He has also participated in the Bolton Food Pantry and Red Out activities that raised awareness of heart disease.

Yu has been accepted to and received scholarships from both Rhodes College and the University of Memphis.
