Summer is often the most challenging time of year for Lifeblood, as the need for blood is high but donations are low. To counteract this, Lifeblood’s Bartlett Arlington Lakeland Donor (BALD) Council is inviting friends and family to honor Bartlett resident Larry Hilbun’s 80th birthday in a way that is near and dear to Larry’s heart — by giving blood.
“Rarely does one meet a man such as Larry Hilbun. He is undoubtedly a man of integrity, dependability and determination,” said Jane Garrett, chairwoman of the BALD Council. “He has volunteered many hours of service to Lifeblood’s volunteer donor program and believes that giving blood is an important way to give back to the community.”
Hilbun has served as the chairman of Lifeblood’s board of directors since October 2012. A native Memphian, Hilbun graduated from East High School before getting his degree from Memphis State University. In his professional career of more than 50 years, Hilbun served in several human resources management positions in public and private sectors, including personnel director for the City of Bartlett and for Shelby County Government. He also served as a member of the Bartlett Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
Donors who successfully donate blood or platelets will receive a limited edition M*A*S*H Bash T-shirt, which they may choose to surrender in exchange for a contribution to be made to the Forever Young Senior Wish Organization toward a trip for World War II Veterans to visit the site of the Battle of the Bulge.
