At its Aug. 27 meeting, the Bartlett school district processed a stack of routine but significant business, including receivingsome pre-K funding, assisting one student who is seeking a GED diploma, approving paperwork related to a dual-enrollment technical program and leasing a soccer field at Bartlett United Methodist Church.
The Pre-K expansion funds are through Shelby County government and are administered through the Shelby County Education Foundation. (The funding is not the same as the voluntary pre-K funding that comes through the state.)
The attendance exemption was a formality required to accommodate a student who is completing General Educational Development (GED) tests to earn a general equivalency diploma in lieu of attending Bartlett High School.
The MOU relates to a dual-enrollment program being added as a cooperative agreement with Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) in Memphis. Students in that program will graduate with an industry certification.
The advanced manufacturing class is a one-year class, and it is part of a core strand in career technical education (CTE). Students typically start this training in their fresman or sophomore year.
The soccer field is being leased for one year for the use of Bartlett High School.
The Bartlett school board also approved revisions to its policy on alternative education for students who have been suspended or expelled from regular school programs.
Changes include adding kindergarteners, specifying mandatory attendance for participants, spelling out that special education needs will be met, and noting that each student will be credited for course work completed and credits earned, just as if he or she were in regular classes.

The board approved the consent agenda, including first reading of these new and revised policies:
- Business operation goals, Policy 3001: A new high-level policy about maintenance and management of buildings and grounds, supplies, transportation, food service, information gathering and insurance.
- Emergency closings, Policy 3002: Minor wording changes to clarify school closures and the authority to postpone/cancel all scheduled student activities.
- Authorized use of school-owned materials, Policy 3003: Minor wording changes to clarify who has authority in loaning or assigning equipment, as well as noting that school equipment is not for personal use or gain.
- Architectural design commissions, Policy 3013: Minor wording adjustment that did not change the original policy’s intent. The policy governs the use of experts for capital improvement projects.
