All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of detailed BPD reports. Incidents are listed in order of the dates they were reported.
Nov. 20
U.S. 64 (theft from motor vehicle)
Someone stole a lawnmower from the open bed of a man’s pickup truck while he was inside Lowe’s, discussing the return of the mower. The theft happened sometime between 4:20 p.m. and 4:40 p.m.
U.S. 70 (aggravated assault)
A juvenile male reported being shot about a month previously at Taco Bell (7571 U.S. 70). He said that he and a friend were in the friend’s vehicle in the parking lot when the suspect (who believed the friend had stolen his money) pulled up. The suspect got into the backseat of the friend’s car, pulled out a black 9mm handgun and pointed it at the friend. The victim said he was also in the backseat, and the suspect next stuck the gun to the victim’s neck.
The juvenile male victim said he grabbed the gun and the suspect pulled the trigger, firing a round through the victim’s right thumb, right bicep and triceps. When the victim struggled for the gun, the suspect fired another round, striking himself in the leg, the victim said.
The suspect fled to his own vehicle, and the victim and his friend drove to Saint Francis Hospital in Bartlett to get treatment for his injuries.
He said the Memphis Police Department has been working the case over the past month. MPD advised BPD detectives that they will forward all documents associated with the case.
Nov. 21
Shadowlawn Road (vandalism)
Shadowlawn Park’s supervisor reported that a cleanup crew found a vulgar picture and lettering spray painted onto the concession stand around 4 p.m. Nov. 20. The basketball court was also spray painted in red and blue.
Bartlett View (theft from motor vehicle)
A woman said someone broke into her vehicle while it was parked in front of her apartment. She said the crime happened between 4 p.m. Nov. 20 and 7 a.m. Nov. 21. The interior was ransacked, and about $2 in loose change was missing. She said her driver’s side door lock is broken, and she believes it was unlocked at the time.
Billy Maher Road (theft)
A Bartlett Elementary School teacher said someone stole her LG Bluetooth headphones ($100) from her desk. She said she waited a while to report the theft because she initially thought she had misplaced the headphones. Then she remembered that a juvenile went back into her classroom while no one else was there.
Nov. 22
Santa Cruz Drive (auto burglary)
A woman said someone broke into her vehicle while it was parked in her driveway between 1 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. The suspect used a tool to force down the rear passenger side window and then used the interior trunk release to access the trunk and steal a car jack and tire iron.
Davies Plantation (theft)
Someone stole four batteries from equipment parked overnight on the property. A spokesman for Ferrell Paving said his company is completing construction in this area and that they had several large CAT tractors, backhoes and rollers at the site.
Brunswick Road (burglary)
A man said someone broke a rear window at his home and stole tools from inside. The incident happened between about 4 p.m. Nov. 21 and 8:30 a.m. Nov. 22.
Mill Grove Park (theft from motor vehicle)
A woman found her car’s trunk and driver’s door open, and she was missing $30 and a battery charger. There were no signs of forced entry and she thinks she might have left the car unlocked overnight.
U.S. 64 (auto burglary)
Someone shattered the driver’s side window of a woman’s vehicle while she was shopping at Walmart (8400 U.S. 64) between about 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The doors were still locked when she returned, and it looked as if no one entered the vehicle.
Stage Road (theft from motor vehicle)
An employee for Hollywood Cinema reported that someone stole the night deposit bag from his vehicle. He said he saw a dark red Toyota four-door sport sedan backed into the adjacent space, over the line and close to his vehicle. He walked to the passenger side of his vehicle, placed the bag in the front passenger seat and walked around the front grill to his driver’s door. Meanwhile the Toyota’s driver got out, opened the victim’s passenger door and took the night deposit.
Nov. 23
Carriage Road (unspecified incident)
An officer discovered a Toyota Sienna parked in a driveway with its two front doors open. The glove compartment and center console were open and the contents scattered through the interior. The vehicle owner said she may have left the doors unlocked the previous night, but she said nothing was missing.
Carriage Drive (unspecified incident)
While working another report, an officer found another vehicle parked in a driveway with the contents of the glove compartment and console scattered inside the vehicle and a white eyeglasses case on the ground near the rear passenger tire. The owner said his wife parked the vehicle the previous night and was positive she locked it. There was no sign of forced entry.
Keats Road (auto burglaries)
A woman said someone entered her unlocked vehicle between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., taking a wallet. While the officer was on scene, another victim reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle too but nothing was stolen.
Chaucer Lane (auto burglaries)
A man said someone entered his unlocked vehicle that was parked in his driveway, rummaged through his paperwork and vehicle, but didn’t steal anything. He said it happened sometime before 7 a.m. A guest, however, reported that someone also burglarized his vehicle and stole several personal items.
Steeplechase Drive (auto burglary)
A woman found items from her glove compartment and center console scattered throughout her car around noon. Her debit card was missing from the cup holder where she normally keeps it. There was no sign of forced entry but she was confident she locked the doors the previous night.
Steeplechase Drive (theft from motor vehicle)
A woman reported that her dog was barking around 4:30 a.m., and she discovered around 6:30 p.m. that someone had ransacked her vehicle. Nothing seemed to be missing, but the center console and glove compartment were open and items were out of place in the vehicle.
Nov. 24
Magnolia Woods Drive (auto burglary)
A man reported that someone entered his unlocked truck that was parked in the driveway overnight and stole his .22-caliber semi-automatic rifle and a hunting knife.
Tree Spring Cove (vandalism)
A man said someone cut the string lights in his front yard.
Nov. 25
Stage Road (theft of a motor vehicle)
A man said someone stole his vehicle while he was inside a gas station. He said he left the engine running and the keys in the ignition while he was inside for a few minutes.
Millgrove Park Drive (auto burglary)
A woman found the contents of her glove compartment and center console strewn around her vehicle’s interior around 11:45 a.m. She said she might have left the vehicle unlocked when she parked it in her driveway around 8 a.m. Nov. 22 and headed out of town. Nothing was missing.
