The Bartlett Police Report for Oct. 1-14 lists the most notable crimes for that period as reported by the Bartlett Police Department; it does not necessarily reflect all police activity. All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of detailed BPD reports.
Some of the more violent incidents involved an aggressive man panhandling in a parking lot and an angry German shepherd that chomped a young bicyclist.
Someone reported a man walking around the parking lot of Sam’s around 4:15 p.m. Oct. 10. He got aggressive when denied. Officers found him leaning over a patron as she sat in her car. When she tried to leave, the man kept invading her personal space, so she flagged down the officers. The panhandler was following closely and talking loud enough that bystanders stopped to watch the commotion. The man got upset, cursed the woman out and said he was a member of the Gangster Disciples street gang as he reached in his backpack. The officers arrested him for aggressive panhandling and disorderly conduct.
About five minutes later the same day, officers responded to the animal bite complaint. A man said his daughter was riding her bike home from the park, and when she passed a home on Northampton a large German Shepherd dashed outside and bit her left calf two or three times. The responding officer saw a large bruise and scratch on her left leg.
When the officers went to the dog owner’s home, he was immediately uncooperative and irate, and he walked toward an officer aggressively. They asked him to calm down multiple times, but he began to yell and curse loudly enough that neighbors across the street came out to see what was happening. The man refused to calm down, so officers arrested him to keep the situation from becoming physical.
Thefts & burglaries
George Cove: A woman said her $50 gold piece (valued at $2,000), $5 gold piece (valued at $900) and a gold ring were missing from her home and had been gone for weeks. She suspects someone she knows took them. Reported Oct. 1.
U.S. 64: A woman noticed her vehicle’s license plate went missing while she was parked close to the door in front of the Walmart garden center (8400 U.S. 64). Reported Oct. 1.
Stage Road: Officers responded to a 12:52 a.m. alarm at the Stage & Bartlett Exxon (5949 Stage Road) on Oct. 3. The found the front glass door shattered and the front cash register missing. The store’s surveillance system captured a video of a male intruder throwing a brick through the door, entering and stealing the cash register. He wore a royal blue jacket, light denim jeans, a black rag on his head and a white bandana covering his face.
U.S. 64: A woman said someone stole her wallet while she was at Panera Bread (8340 U.S. 64) and charged $1,430.42 to one of her credit cards at Game Stop (2878 Wolf Creek Pkwy., Memphis). The suspect also made several other charges to the same debit/credit card. Reported Oct. 6.
Altruria Road: An employee at the Marathon gas station (4230 Altruria Road) found the carwash’s bay door unlocked and halfway open. He found that almost all of the car wash parts had been stolen. There were no signs of forced entry to the bay door. Reported Oct. 8.
Blue Lagoon Drive: Someone stole the stainless steel stove and refrigerator from a home owned by a property management company sometime during Oct. 5-9. Reported Oct. 9.
East Forked River Cove: Someone stole the fridge and stove from a vacant home owned by a property management company. Reported Oct. 9.
Misty River Road: Someone stole the fridge, stove and microwave from a vacant home owned by a property management company. Reported Oct. 9.
Stage Road: A complainant reported that an unknown female pulled onto a business’ lot, driving a dark four-door vehicle. She walked to the front of the business and returned to her vehicle twice, carrying two large flowerpots containing ferns. The flowers and pots were worth about $50 per pot. Reported Oct. 11.
Vehicle-related
U.S. 64: Someone burglarized a man’s vehicle in the Walmart parking lot (8400 U.S. 64) the afternoon of Oct. 4. Security footage showed an older model white Ford pickup with an illegible license plate park near the victim’s vehicle. An older male suspect in a brown shirt punched the front driver’s side door lock, rummaged through the vehicle and left. The victim said nothing was stolen. He had already gone through his vehicle before the officer arrived. Reported Oct. 4.
Stage Road: A man reported that someone stole his firearm, holster and PDA from his vehicle while it was being treated at the Simoniz Car Wash (6800 Stage Road) the afternoon of Oct. 4. After the car wash, he went to dinner at TJ’s (2821 N. Houston Levee Road, Memphis) and returned home in Memphis. He said the car wash was the only place he’d been where others had access to his vehicle’s interior. The Simoniz manager said a review of security footage didn’t show any suspicious activity while the vehicle was in camera range. Reported Oct. 4.
Fluss Road: A man reported finding the center console open in his unlocked vehicle. Someone had stolen his handgun and rummaged through other belongings. He last remembers seeing the handgun around Aug. 5. He believes he accidentally left the doors unlocked the night before the report to get money for a pizza. Reported Oct. 5.
Devine Street: Someone burglarized a woman’s vehicle between Oct. 5 and 8. The glove box was left open and papers were in disarray. Reported Oct. 8.
Daybreak Drive: An officer on patrol spotted a burglarized auto at 1:21 a.m. Oct. 9. The interior dome light was on, the driver’s door was ajar and interior items had been rummaged through. The owner said he leaves it unlocked, and nothing was stolen.
Daybreak Drive: Officers spotted a vehicle with signs of burglary around 2:25 a.m. Oct. 9. The victim said he leaves it unlocked but nothing was stolen.
Daybreak Drive: A victim said someone stole his vehicle from his driveway overnight. He left a door unlocked with the keys in the cup holder. He added that his handgun was in the glove compartment. Reported Oct. 9.
Oakmoor Circle North: Someone rummaged through two different homes’ unlocked vehicles overnight but apparently took nothing. Reported Oct. 9.
Oak Bark Lane: Someone stole a handgun, a 5.11 molle-type pouch containing cash and miscellaneous first aid items. The man wasn’t sure if he locked the vehicle when he parked it around 10:30 p.m., but he locked it remotely around 2 a.m. Reported Oct. 9.
Oakmoor Circle West: Someone rummaged through two of a woman’s vehicles overnight and stole a backpack. Reported Oct. 9.
Unspecified location: A woman reported that someone rummaged through her car while it was in her driveway and stole her checkbook, probably overnight. She heard her dog barking around 1 a.m. but ignored it. Reported Oct. 9.
Domino Cove: Someone stole about $10 in quarters from a man’s unlocked vehicle overnight. Reported Oct. 10.
Unspecified location: Someone punched the lock on a man’s vehicle and stole his pistol on Oct. 10 while he was parked at Saint Francis Hospital’s Imaging Center.
Windy Scape: Someone stole about $15 from a man’s unsecured white vehicle overnight, entered his garage and stole an electric bike, and rummaged through a second vehicle. The electric bike was later found on Oak Forest.
Maher View: A woman said someone stole her handgun from her unlocked vehicle while it was parked overnight at her home. Reported Oct. 13.
Calla Cove: Someone stole a black backpack containing sports wrapping and equipment from a man’s unlocked vehicle overnight, but he found the backpack the next day. It was let int he street in front of another home on his cove, with all contents still inside the bag. Reported Oct. 13.
North Street: A man said someone took a black bag from his unlocked vehicle sometime between 7 p.m. Oct. 13 and midday Oct. 14. The bag contained about $55, two revolver-type speed loads and a handgun. Reported Oct. 14.
Vandalism
Fourth Avenue: Someone tossed eggs onto a woman’s car between about 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Oct. 7 while it was parked on the street. The eggs hit the driver’s side door, window and interior of the vehicle. An anonymous caller reported that the vandals were in a white vehicle. An additional officer in the area spotted the suspects’ vehicle and saw egg splatter on its driver’s side rear fender. Several juveniles were inside, and they all admitted to throwing eggs. They were arrested and released to their parents.
Unspecified location: A man said someone ran over his mailbox and post while he was briefly away from home around 1 p.m. Oct. 8. Security footage in the area shows the damage may have been intentional. Reported Oct. 9.
Other incidents
Unspecified location: A woman whose house is up for sale said some unknown person posted the house for rent on Craigslist. The post appeared brief and then was taken down. Reported Oct. 3.
Prosperity Way: A woman reported on Oct. 10 that a suspicious vehicle had been parked in front of her home since the previous morning. It was a vehicle reported stolen in Memphis on Oct. 8. The responding officers found several items inside that matched the description of stolen property taken from several Bartlett auto burglaries on Oct. 8.
Unspecified location: A woman said she put her house up for sale on Oct. 7 and since then she has received a $600 laptop from Fingerhut that she didn’t order. Target also contacted her to ask if she had opened an account, and she also found an account opened in her name with QVC shopping. Reported Oct. 13.
