Poems, stories, essays, art, photography, interview, reviews, cartoons, and songs splashed across Bartlett High School this week in Wardrobe, the school’s new literary magazine.
Emma Brick-Hezeau, Sydnie Thornton, Jaelle Salsbury, Katie Davis, Abbi Valori, Morgan Schoep, Jackie Nguyen and Rebecca Alberson spent the entire school year soliciting written pieces from their peers at the high school and the 9th Grade Academy.
Ultimately, Volume 1 held 32 pages of creativity.
Editors said Wardrobe is “a realm hovering behind our everyday” and invited readers to unravel the meanings of the selected pieces chosen because “we could not stop enjoying” them.
The theme this year is “Eunoia,” meaning “beautiful mind.”
The magazine’s ethereal cover art blended soft colorful images of a regal woman and a a floating bulb holding tools of creativity. Brick-Hezau and Nguyen collaborated to digitally blend their distinct styles into a single, solid work.
Editorial Board members Katie Davis, Jaelle Salsbury, and Sydnie Thornton began planning the magazine during summer then recruited staff in an Open House Party where Thornton’s homemade Turkish Delight and other goodies lured others who love to write.
Davis, also on the yearbook staff, used her graphic arts talent to turn a cardboard box full of paper into the 10- by 10-inch tabloid that was distributed free to 2,000 students in the school.
Staff members are students in Caroline Howard’s Honors and AP English classes. Howard said it was a privilege to guide the publication with help from staffers at The Bartlett Express and its parent company.
