Bartlett Beer Board imposes $3,500 in fines for 2 businesses

A Bartlett sting operation on May 8 found two local businesses in violation of the city’s beer ordinance that forbits sales of beers to minors under age 21. Both earned fines at the May 3 Bartlett Beer Board meeting.

Those caught in the operation included:

  • Baby Jack’s BBQ at 7610 U.S. 70, Bartlett. An 18-year-old operative successfully bought Coors Light at the restaurant on May 8, earning a $2,500 civil penalty. It was the restaurant’s second violation since the permit was issued in January 2013. The permit holder is Will Clem of Arlington. The employee who allegedly sold to a minor was Carl Carnaham, 55. The restaurant’s first violation was April 2, 2013, which merited a 15-day suspension of the restaurant’s beer license.
  • Tugwell Oil (Exxon location), 8374 Old Brownsville Road, Bartlett. An 18-year-old operative successfully bought a six-pack of Coors Light on May 8 in the location’s first violation since the permit was issued in June 2007. The violation earned a $1,000 civil penalty. The permit holder is James W. Tugwell III of Brunswick. The employee who allegedly sold to a minor was Jill Brings, 55.

The board’s guidelines cover the typical consequences for offenses a business makes the previous three years: First offenses can cause a 15-day beer license suspension or a $1,000 civil penalty. For second offences, the board can give a 30-day suspension or $2,500 civil penalty. Third offenses can merit revocation of the beer permit for a year.
