Fire alarm drill succeeds
Last Friday in a training drill, the city’s firefighters got the chance to show their stuff. “7230 Cedar Road. Possible structure fire,” came the radio call. The time was 2:08 p.m. One by one, the units responded. The firemen, busy preparing for a holiday potluck supper, swung onto the trucks they had just finished cleaning for the evening’s festivities. Engines roaring the big pumpers headed out.

Work Continues on Kraft Pilot Plant at Bartlett Industrial Park
With concrete being poured and the walls almost ready to go up, work is proceeding at a rapid pace in the construction of the Kraft Food Ingredients pilot plant at the Bartlett Industrial Park.
The 30,000 square foot plant will be used to test large batch production of food products or ingredients for the company’s commercial products, confections and ingredients division. According to associate director for engineering and technical support, Richard Thesing, KFI will employ 13 people at this $2.8 million facility now under construction.

Chamber members donate Christmas gifts
On Dec. 17, the Bartlett Area Chamber of commerce was scheduled to hold a party for Holiday Heroes, members of the Chamber who volunteered to buy gifts for the children of Boys Town. Co-sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Bartlett, the party was the peak of the program, which is in its ninth year. The kids got to thank their holiday heroes and the generous sponsors had the opportunity to meet the children they helped. “They agree to buy these gifts with their money,” said Judy Summers with the BACC. While a hero can only spend $75 per child, the program ensured that each of the 86 kids received what they wanted. “The children provide a wish list for them to purchase from. They send it to me then I assign them to holiday heroes,” Summers said.

Aldermen Approve Police Dog and Trucks
The Bartlett Police Department will receive a new law enforcement dog and get instructor certified at the same time. The Bartlett Board of Aldermen approved $18,244 for the department to obtain a new dog and have an officer obtain certification to train other dog handlers for Cobra Canine in Chesapeake, VA. One of the Bartlett dogs is being forced into retirement after suffering from an injured back. The city has a regiment of three dogs to assist in police work.
